About James
I am a passionate historian with six years of university education and experience across five institutions. I hold a BA (Hons) and MPhil in History from Cardiff University, alongside a CertHE (equivalent) in Czech Language from Masaryk University. I have been awarded two scholarships to study Czech at two other universities in the Czech Republic, and was a registered reader as a researcher at the Bodleian Libraries/Oxford University. While my expertise spans methodologies and histories of multiple periods and regions, my research has primarily focused on Modern European History and the history of Communism in Czechoslovakia. I currently work as an Archivist and researcher for an East London heritage organisation, documenting the stories of individuals who might otherwise be forgotten. Alongside this, I am currently researching into early 17th-century British political history. Through my academic and professional experience, I have developed a deep understanding of historical analysis, a commitment to preserving the past, and a dedication to making history accessible and engaging for others.

I am experienced with advanced historical methodology, and have experience in writing essays of up to 50,000 words. I can teach complex areas of history, prepare for exams, and hone essay-writing skills within my lessons to help reach those A*s and 1sts. Having studied A-level, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Research in History, I have over 9 years’ worth of history experience, six of these at a university level. I studied History at Colyton Grammar School, and Cardiff University. I have studied at three different Czech universities, two through scholarships. I was a postgraduate researcher at Oxford University, and I am a Postgraduate Member of the Royal Historical Society. I have spoken at numerous subject-based conferences, including at Oxford and Bristol Universities. My research has focused on Modern European History. I am a very personable and patient tutor. Lessons are one hour long, and are aimed at GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate students. Lesson structure will vary depending on need - they can be knowledge or methodology (essay writing skills) based but will have some degree of both in any given lesson - and will be focused on the individual student’s needs. I give clear feedback and guidance to help lead you to top marks! I hold an Enhanced DBS check, ensuring a professional and safe learning environment.
