Find out more about Noluthando

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?

I speak isiZulu fluently because it is my mother tongue and part of my cultural heritage. Growing up in a Zulu-speaking family and community allowed me to learn the language naturally, both in formal and informal settings. Over time, my passion for teaching it grew as I saw how language connects people and preserves identity.
  • Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

King Shaka Zulu is one of the most emblematic figures representing isiZulu culture. He symbolizes strength, leadership, innovation, and unity — qualities that continue to inspire pride in Zulu identity and language today.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite Zulu phrases is “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” — meaning “A person is a person through other people.” It reflects the Ubuntu philosophy, which emphasizes compassion, respect, and interconnectedness among people.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking isiZulu matters deeply to me because it connects me to my roots, my ancestors, and my community. It is not only a means of communication but also a way of preserving culture, values, and traditions for future generations.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help students with the learning process?

The main difficulty in learning isiZulu is mastering the click sounds, tonal variations, and noun classes. To help students, I focus on pronunciation through repetition, listening exercises, and practical conversation practice. I also use real-life examples to make grammar easier to understand.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your language learning or your student days?

When I first started helping non-Zulu-speaking classmates with basic greetings and expressions, I realized how rewarding it was to see their confidence grow. That experience sparked my passion for teaching and made me appreciate how language can bring people together.
  • How has travel or a specific experience helped you to increase your understanding and appreciation of the language?

Living in multicultural environments where isiZulu is spoken alongside other South African languages has deepened my appreciation for its richness and adaptability. It has shown me how isiZulu continues to evolve while maintaining its cultural essence.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I am patient, passionate, and dedicated to helping each student reach their potential. I tailor my lessons to individual needs, making learning interactive and enjoyable. My cultural knowledge, combined with my teaching experience, helps students not only learn isiZulu but also understand the beautiful culture behind it.
