About Mathilda

I am currently a 5th-year student enrolled at the Architectural Association, pursuing RIBA Part 2. My academic journey at the AA commenced with my undergraduate studies (RIBA Part 1), a continuation of my dedication to architectural education within this esteemed institution. During my year out, I gained valuable practical experience as a Part 1 junior designer at 1508 London, contributing to my growth as a professional in the field. This hands-on engagement provided me with insights that complemented my academic pursuits. Drawing from my own journey, I've had the privilege of assisting 10 students closely hailing from diverse universities in London, Paris, and New York. These collaborations span various disciplines, encompassing architecture, design, and art. Notably, my unique entry into the Architectural Association, bypassing the foundation year through portfolio submission, ignited my passion for supporting peers with their portfolios and interview preparations. Many of these individuals successfully secured placements at prestigious institutions such as Parsons New York, Central Saint Martins, AA, and IE. Motivated by this enriching experience, I am inspired to channel my expertise into a supplementary role, aiding students in their academic pursuits as a side endeavour. This endeavour seeks to empower aspiring scholars to overcome challenges and realise their ambitions, fostering a strong foundation for their future achievements.

As an RIBA Part 2 tutor, I provide a comprehensive range of services, including Interior Design classes and portfolio strategising. My expertise extends to aiding university students in various facets: from academic projects to freelance endeavours and software instruction. One of my key offerings is personalised portfolio planning. Tailored to the specific aspirations of each student, I meticulously design portfolios encompassing essential elements such as a working plan, strategic inclusions, and areas to emphasise. By suggesting suitable projects for inclusion, I aim to create a cohesive and impactful presentation. For students already engaged in their creative work, my involvement takes the form of portfolio review and enhancement. Through constructive feedback, strategic guidance, and targeted advice, I assist in refining their portfolios and steer them towards a path conducive to achieving their desired academic pursuits. It is my commitment to empower students to navigate their educational journey successfully and equip them with the skills and insight required to flourish in their chosen courses.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in teaching art and design ignited upon graduating from high school. As a hobby, I began offering lessons to friends and assisting them in preparing their portfolios for university applications, all while simultaneously focusing on building my own portfolio.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialize in tutoring Architecture, the degree I am currently pursuing. However, my expertise extends to Interior Design, a field in which I have amassed significant professional experience. My teaching approach encompasses various facets, ranging from portfolio development to guiding students through their academic endeavors, enhancing their project outcomes, and imparting my skillset and insights. Additionally, I provide comprehensive instruction in software applications, including Autocad, Rhino, Sketchup, Vray, Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, adding a practical dimension to the education I offer.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role models are my parents, both accomplished architects, from whom I have acquired an invaluable wealth of knowledge. Their guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of the architectural field.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In my opinion being a good tutor requires a combination of skills qualities and approaches to have the best possible interaction with the students. The most important one are communication and listening skills, patience, adaptability, clarity and organization, time management, patience and finally the tutor having a strong command of knowledge and expertise
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Architect I.M. Pei once said, "Architecture is the art of how to waste space." This seemingly counterintuitive statement reflects the idea that leaving spaces open can enhance the overall design by creating a sense of balance, flow, and harmony. It's a reminder that sometimes, less is more in the world of architecture and design.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The amount of new software and updates that emerge every year.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Tutoring has evolved into more than just a pastime for me; it has become a profound passion that I wholeheartedly dedicate myself to. Within this realm of education, my enthusiasm for architecture burns brightest. The opportunity to guide eager learners through the intricate tapestry of architectural design and theory is a source of immense fulfillment. With each tutoring session, I relish the chance to instill in my students the same awe and appreciation that I hold for the fusion of art, science, and culture that architecture embodies. This passion extends beyond textbooks and blueprints; it's about igniting the creative spark, nurturing critical thinking, and fostering a deep understanding of how architecture shapes our world. Witnessing the gradual transformation of students into confident thinkers and aspiring architects, ready to shape the built environment, is the driving force behind my unwavering commitment to tutoring in the field of architecture.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What sets me apart as the best architecture tutor is not only my in-depth knowledge of architectural principles and history but also my unwavering dedication to fostering a deep understanding and genuine passion in my students. I believe in tailoring my teaching approach to each student's unique learning style, ensuring that complex concepts are conveyed in an accessible manner. With practical insights gained from hands-on experience in the field, I bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. My commitment to guiding students toward holistic architectural thinking, coupled with my ability to inspire creativity and critical analysis, makes me a transformative and effective mentor in the realm of architecture education.
