About Mikala
Mika has been playing the Violin for 15 years. She graduated from The Catholic University of America with honors, a Bachelor's in Psychology with a Minor in Studio Art and Classical Violin. She is an Art Psychotherapy Masters student at Metafora, Singer, and an emerging multi-disciplinary artist based in Washington, DC. Her learning journey has been curated by incredible female musicians Tatiana Glava (from the Dallas Quartet) and Alessandra Cuffaro (who was the first woman in Italy to perform Paganini's Caprice No. 24 from memory). These magnificently resilient women have left her with a deep passion for music, and a love for teaching. Mikala's personal practice involves a continuation of classical techniques and pieces. She enjoys exploring new genres such as jazz, house, R&B, rap, techno, and other tunes of interest. She is excited to have teaching as another form of expression with the violin.

Mikala works with beginner students of all ages. The lesson plan focuses on comprehension of fundamentals in order to build correct habits from the root. They are catered to your individual needs and intentions. In each session, time is taken to structure a digestible lesson plan that is productive and challenging, without becoming too overstimulating to internalize.
Lessons begin with a quick 'check-in' meditation to bring awareness into the body. Playing the violin is a unique act that requires both brain hemispheres to communicate. Brain-body connection is a crucial part of the physical, mental, emotional act of playing music.
The lesson transitions into warm-up exercises that bring attention to brain-body connection. These include technique-building exercises that are catered to each student. The lesson is concluded with an assigned piece that aids in internalization of the newly-learned techniques. This piece is co-chosen with the student so that they feel passion towards what is being practiced. This way we will blend technique, with the innate passion for music. Depending on the student and the day, more time will be spent with either technique or the assigned piece of music. The lesson ends with a review of what (and how) was learnt, and what needs to be practiced before the next lesson. The necessary reading materials for class will either be shared, or the student will be provided a link to acquire it.

Her personality make lessons something to look forward too. The biggest reason I used to avoid lessons was stress, but fortunately Ive found someone, Mikala, who gives me the time and patience I need from a tutor. Most of all I feel motivated because I can see how much progress I've been already been making with her. Thank you Mikala!
Mikala is a patient, well-organized tutor that makes you feel welcome and free to make mistakes along the way. An overall warm, welcoming, and dedicated person! I am grateful to know her.
What a lovely human being and what an excellent teacher. Violin isn't the easiest of instruments to play and so I'm so grateful to Miss Mikala for making it a joy to practice. My kids love her! (So do I ) I don't have to drag them to practice anymore. And if i can't drive them to an in-person session, my kids still get to practice with her online! What a plus! Thank you for being an awesome teacher.
