When I first meet a student, it's really important to actually small talk a bit to break the ice and foster a relationship, especially knowing that it's hard to speak up in a classroom setting with the teacher. In tutoring English, I wait for the student to explain what it is they need help with, if they know. Otherwise, I'll encourage that we read through what they're working on together to find out as a team what it is we'll focus on. Patience is really important to sessions and creating a space that feels safe to the student. That goes for both writing and piano. Asking questions about the work that open discussion and inspire good brainstorming is extremely important. And staying organized is a good way to help a student succeed. I make notes after my sessions to remember what areas needed improvement in the session on both my part and the student's.
I have worked with different ages on different subjects, and would be thrilled to be able to work with all ages. I have worked with children, college students and grad students. I have also worked with very shy students and many English language learners.
When a student hits a milestone, like having practiced every day, I'll reward them with a sticker. Once they've collected 10 stickers, I'll give them a prize.
