About Andy
I'm currently a final year English student at King's College London, where I have also taken classes in their Music department. Currently, alongside my studies, I am an English Literature GCSE and A Level tutor with another online tutoring company. I am proficient in sight reading and music theory, and I am experienced in piece composition as well as arranging music for different instruments and voices. I was classically trained in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for 7 years, and have extensive experience in both casual and formal/recital-style performance. I am currently the musical director for my a cappella group at King's, called The Rolling Tones. Over the past few years, the group has performed on Broadway and the West End, toured the west coast of the US, and was even invited to sing for the royal family of Bahrain! As musical director, I arrange and teach the repertoire to the group in our twice weekly rehearsals, which began in-person in September 2020, but sadly have been remotely conducted since October due to restrictions. We're a tightly knit group of friends who all share a passion for singing, and I simply could not have asked for a better group of people to teach! Each member has taught me something about my own style of teaching, as well as what works well when teaching remotely and what adaptations need to be made.

Hello! I'm Andy, and I'd love to help you increase your proficiency in areas like singing, sight-reading, and music theory. I offer supplementary guidance for more intermediate singers who would like some extra help in learning different pieces, as well as basic intro-level singing lessons for people who would like to improve their confidence as a vocalist but aren't sure where to start.
At the core of my teaching style is an understanding that each person is different - everyone's brain processes information in a different way. In order to help my tutees learn effectively, I open up the (virtual) classroom to be a collaborative space, and establish a mutual respect between myself and whoever I am teaching. I believe that if I do not actively demonstrate respect of my own tutees' capabilities, work and progress, I give my them little reason to engage with or value what I am teaching them. My main goal above all else is to pass on knowledge to people who are eager to learn, while taking their specific needs, goals, and learning style into account every step of the way (and making that as fun and rewarding as possible!)
I like to present the person I am teaching with options about how to approach something, ask them which one feels the most comfortable, and then work off of that going forward. For example, getting a grasp on rhythms can be challenging when you are not surrounded by other people and able to feel the beat of a piece, so I approach teaching these rhythms to members of my a cappella group in different ways depending on their learning style. Some find it makes more sense to them to clap out the rhythms a few times - with others, singing the phrase while staying on one note helps them get their heads around how the words slot into the rhythm, and where vowels form. Others just find it confusing to break the phrase down so much, and prefer to tap out the rhythm while they sing through the phrase, putting stresses where each note falls.
The bottom line is: everyone is different, and it's my job as a tutor to help people find out which learning style works best for them so that our sessions leave my tutees feeling rewarded, fulfilled, and more confident in their own abilities.

Andy is such a wonderful, warm, patient person and I feel very lucky to have found them as my singing tutor. As someone who has only recently come back to singing after many years, I was incredibly nervous to sing out loud in front of another person - preempting lingering feelings of fear and embarrassment from school choir days. However I needn’t have worried as Andy immediately provided an environment of warmth in which I felt encouraged to take small steps, pushing myself within my own existing abilities. They always make sure our lessons are focused around material I truly enjoy singing which has helped me massively in feeling like I’m growing towards my own personal goals. Andy is extremely knowledgable in this field, but never overwhelms you with information. Instead of feeling intimidated, I instead find myself inspired to learn more - and often do end up doing extra practice and research between our classes. They have created the perfect balance of having a productive class in which I feel like I’m progressing and being pushed to my best capabilities, but with much fun and laughter - the simple joy of singing always the priority.
Though we have only connected virtually thus far, this has made absolutely no impact on the quality of our lessons. In fact I find it quite convenient to be able to fit these lessons in to my day-to-day life without the concerns of getting to and from another place - those often having been the easy excuses I made to myself previously as to why I shouldn’t make the time to do something I love. With those removed, I find myself itching for our next tutorial so that I once again feel the joy of escaping from the world for a few hours to enjoy singing in a space I feel truly comfortable in.
If you’re thinking about taking up singing, but like me have concerns about humiliation, or being shaped into a singer you’re not then Andy is the tutor for you. They have taken me as a beginner, and helped me to evolve for my ability and my goals without pushing me to do anything that makes me feel uncomfortable. I feel truly grateful to have had such a wonderful return to singing for me, and I couldn’t recommend them enough.Andy’s experience and love for music is evident when they teach. They bring a relaxed and encouraging vibe to the sessions that make me feel like I’m actually understanding and enjoying at the same time. A very friendly, knowledgeable motivating teacher for sure !!
