About Sheila
I am a dedicated English and Media academic with a Masters Degree in English, a First Class Degree in Scriptwriting / English, and a Masters Degree in Directing.
I also have a PAL certification for classroom based tutoring but I also tutor online and have current ESL students who work with me on literature, comprehension and language.
I can provide teaching in English (inc. GCSE, A'Level, English as a Foreign Language, Degree level and Basic and Reading and Writing skills), Communication Studies and Screenwriting.
I currently offer private tutoring, both online and in person to teenagers, college students, university students and adult learners, offering a patient and caring approach.
As well as undertaking work for with the BBC (something the media / film students tend to be interested in) I have also worked on a number of feature films / short films, had articles published and I have won awards for my writing). Therefore, I have a considerable amount of practical and academic knowledge across the media industry, suitable for English, Film and Media Disciplines.
I really care about my students and helping them achieve their goals. I truly believe that anyone can do it if someone believes in their potential. Whether they are just starting out or if they are a mature learner. Everyone deserves to be the best they can be.
For the last 15 years I have been providing a broad range of academic training courses and tutoring to students and adult learners in GCSE / A'level English, Digital Media and Scriptwriting, but I have also offered more basic reading / writing skills.
I currently work with a number of private students from GCSE level through to A' level and beyond, helping them achieve their goals and supporting them with the challenges that inevitably come with preparing and passing exams.
I have taken grade D and even E graded students to grade A results at English Literature and Language, enthusing students to realise they can get brilliant grades with a bit of work and passion.
I have delivered classes to university level students, college students, school students and business owners across a wide range of disciplines.
I am always happy to provide references for my work too, so you can be assured of a great level of service.

I believe learning through association with what you know, is the easiest way to tutor people of all ages. It generally helps students to identify more easily the knowledge they need to pass their exams and most importantly, building confidence. This is by far one of the most important aspects of learning and I work closely with students to identify where they need the most help.
Most students in my experience have the tools, but self-doubt means they do not fulfil their potential. This is something I aim to change for every student I encounter. Whether they are an adult, KS3 or aiming to improve their GCSE grade potential. I love English and literature and this tends to enthuse most students.
I have taken grade E students to a level 9 pass with a patient, inspiring approach and have assisted students in identifying the pleasure from English that can be derived from good tutoring.
Being very patient, I find it's better to adapt my tutoring to the individual, rather than apply a 'one size fits all'. This means a better success rate as different students have different strengths and weaknesses. So all my tutoring is built around the individual student. This starts from where they are now and aims to get them to a better academic place over time.
I usually like to assess learners at the beginning of meeting them / talking to them and then devise a target plan to help them achieve learning goals. Whether that's an overall improvement or a target grade, I can help them understand what is required to reach their goals and then create a lesson structure that will get them there.
At the moment, I offer English GCSE / A'Level, English as a Foreign Language and bespoke University tutoring support one-to-one via Zoom or Google Meets, but I can also travel depending on where you are located.
Additionally, as well as reading and writing skills. I provide full support and 'real time' lessons with a clear structure. Each element is specific to the student being taught and we really get into the subject matter.
If you are looking for a friendly, compassionate, personable tutor who will encourage you or your child to speak better English or you want to tackle an essay or prepare for an exam, or you want to brush up on the basics, I can help.
Most lessons are 1 hour but this can be adapted to suit the learner. I can offer 2 hour lessons for more intense learning - especially useful for those who want to get ready for exams. Some students fair better with shorter, punchier lessons. Other students need more time. So I am very flexible for this reason.

I can offer a bulk lesson booking option for students who are preparing for exams over term-time.
This is usually a preferential rate and is payable in advance and combines the hourly rate, with a discount.
The lessons are then booked in for each week until they are finished by the student.
All my rates cover teaching materials and any supplementary materials required, as well as exam examples and access to advanced study aids, which usually are the most beneficial.
