About Ben
I am a Sophomore at Berklee College of Music majoring in Performance and Independent Recording & Production. I taught students from ages 4-44 at Guitar Center for 18 months, with a good retention rate. I have 11 years of drum set experience and have studied many genres such as rock/metal, jazz, fusion, funk, and hip hop. I'm currently a member of two bands and play gigs in Boston.

In my drum lessons I try to approach the instrument, music, and the student from a few different angles. One of those is focusing on technique (teaching the student the methods of drum practice that the greatest drummers of our time have established, and creating a daily/weekly practice plan.) The other focus is to push the student to think for themselves, discovering which path they want to take through music, which genres they want to play and the many options within those styles of music. The third (and most important) part of the process is making sure to have fun!
A typical lesson with me would consist of:
-Technique drills: Working on hand/foot technique and focusing on the minute details in order to understand exactly how the physics behind drumming work. These start with basic rudiments and hand/foot exercises, and move on to more in-depth exercises we can find in different drum books
-Songs: For beginners I will assign easy songs from different genres so the student can build a repertoire and get comfortable with the basics of playing those genres. For intermediate drummers I will push them to find their own music to play, and also recommend standards that are useful to know. A big part of learning songs is understanding that the process is different depending on which genre is being played, so we will get into those nuances.
-Improv: In my opinion, improvisation is the essence of the creative spirit of music. The more you work on this skill, the more rewarding it is, and the more comfortable you are with different musical settings. For beginners we will work on "breaking the ice" (being able to combine ideas from their drills to create original statements on the drums). For intermediate/advanced students we will work on improvising to different tracks, improvising in different styles of music and in different time signatures, and some tools of improv.

When Ben worked with our company he was very reliable and trustworthy. More importantly, coming from a music school graduate, he's a better drummer than I'll ever be a pianist. Although I've never taken a drum lesson with him, I would guess that he approaches teaching in such a way that he tailors his lessons to the student and finds the best way to pass on his knowledge.
I got introduced to Ben a year ago at Berklee College of Music where we are both students. In my time knowing Ben, I have collaborated with him for many of my projects, learnt the drums from him, and seen him as a disciplined and dedicated student in our classes together. Most importantly, I have seen him grow exponentially in his skillset and knowledge of his instrument.
With me as his student, Ben started by working on technique but simultaneously introduced me to basic grooves and songs to keep me engaged. He understood well where I had difficulties and was able to define and clearly articulate how I could improve.
He is patient as a teacher, passionate as a musician, and more than creative as an artist. I have loved learning with and from him and I highly recommend him as a teacher.View more recommendations
