About Lucy
I am a tutor of French with ten years' experience abroad and in the UK. I have seen dozens of students to A-Level and GCSE success, helped Business French clients add a valuable asset to their skill-set, and ensured that those learning French for family reasons or simply for their own enrichment have become able to communicate confidently in spoken and written French.
As a current MPhil/PhD student in French Studies, I have near-native fluency in French and regularly use the language to write up and present my research.

My work is based on Communicative Language Teaching, which put simply is the idea that, whether we are studying for exams, business or personal reasons, we learn languages best by using them and by making the context of their usage as relevant as possible. Grammar and vocabulary are always presented in context and are worked into activities aimed at giving you the maximum time possible to use them in memorable, enjoyable and relevant ways.
This makes for a wide variety of activities designed to get you talking or writing – from debates to interviews to email exchanges – often sparked by real-life materials in French, such as newspaper articles, songs and chants, or video clips. In small group classes pair- and group-work is extensively used, while in one-to-one sessions I act as a facilitator, deliberately keeping my own ‘talking time’ low whilst providing you with all the language you need to express yourself. I usually use my talking time to give clear instructions, to introduce and check comprehension of new language, and to give feedback on recurring errors and good use of language at the end of a session. The rest of the time is for you to practice and play with the language point in question.
Exam preparation classes are planned along CLT principles to give students the best way to remember language while boosting their communicative confidence. This is married with training in exam technique, including honing listening skills and structuring essays and oral examination responses as per the relevant mark schemes.

I took lessons with Lucy for a year as something to keep my brain working during maternity leave and I can honestly say she was great. Made me feel very relaxed and had me communicating in French from day 1. Also held my baby while I worked and got him to 'join in' a fair few times!
Lucy is a very passionate, innovative and inspiring tutor. I am learning French for my job and it's really upped my confidence. She loves the language and it shows: she's great at finding ways for me to speak a lot but she has been very helpful with the technical side too: she explains grammar points I used to find really hard in a clear way and goes through careful drills to make sure they stick.
