About Elliott
Once a quiet student myself, who lacked confidence in class, I discovered my passion for English at university, leading me to complete a PhD and even get to write a book on my favourite author (Flann O'Brien - if you are interested!) Now, I'm here to help you gain confidence and clarity in your English studies.
With my experience teaching at both secondary school and university levels, I am able to offer personalised tutoring tailored to your needs. Whether you want to enhance your written expression, excel in close textual analysis, deepen your contextual understanding, or refine your exam techniques, I'm here to offer guidance and practical support, acting as the catalyst to help you achieve your academic goals.
At university I received a First in my Bachelor's, and a Distinction in my Master's, receiving Government of Ireland Scholarships to carry out my PhD and my Postdoctoral Fellowship. I am now a published academic, looking to help others make key improvements (and enjoy the subject a little bit more) with each lesson.
I also have a solid grounding in secondary school teaching. My practical knowledge of helping to prepare classes for English Literature and English Language exams and coursework at Brighton College, as well as preparing groups for university applications, means that I have first-hand experience of ensuring that students achieve top grades and reach their first-choice academic destinations.

With my extensive experience in private tutoring, secondary school teaching, and in leading seminars in higher education settings, I bring a blend of passion and practical skills to every lesson. My lessons aim to boost your confidence in close reading, contextual understanding, essay writing, and a whole host of other skills which will improve your performance in English and which are applicable beyond the subject.
My tailored approach ensures you not only grasp the subject but excel in it. Having achieved top honours in my academic journey, including a scholarship-funded PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowship at Trinity College Dublin, I know what it takes to succeed.
I craft lessons that challenge and support, tailored to your specific needs and exam requirements. Whether you're preparing for exams, applying to top universities, or looking to build a strong foundation in the subject, I am here to guide you every step of the way. My lessons can involve writing practice, scaffolded essay walk-throughs, close reading, or can be more open and discursive, depending on what works best for your learning style and for the course content which we are covering.
I am happy to assess which areas need improvements and then help put together a plan which works for you to make it happen. Whether you need support in writing skills, textual comprehension, or any specific exam-focused tasks, I will be able to help you refine your performance in the subject, whilst hopefully getting a new appreciation for the value and enjoyment to be found in English!
