About Marc

When I was young(er), I used to go to bed staring at a multiplication table poster on my wall, finding patterns and impressing with calculations. I think this goes some way to explaining how I got a reputation as a bit of a whiz at school, going on to study Economics (with French) at Nottingham and then become the data guy at work. From around the time I started teaching maths in 2014, other adventures included launching a community start up, organising community festivals, and a host of creative endeavours alongside a penchant for living nomadically.

My most recent interest in dialogue, and the exploration of what goes beyond all this measurement business. So while I don't believe maths is the be all and end all, it certainly doesn't need to be a barrier, and I've seen many environments in which it can be a valuable asset.

I hope to show how maths can be helpful and understandable in the world outside of numbers on paper, and I have an excellent track record of helping people become surprisingly fluent.

I am led to believe that the capacity to be fluent numerically is like the capacity to be fluent linguistically: it's there for us all, one way or another. I have seen enough people with supposed difficulties and disinterest in maths follow a thorough exploration of Fibonacci in nature to see this to hold some truth.

But interest and attention can disappear in subtle ways - from teaching that lacks relevance, to gaps in our understandings that grow, to the fear of being wrong, to a resistance to authority, to the idea that an aptitude for something is simply not in our nature.

Much like learning a language, a good base is to make sure all the numbers and symbols make sense - including understanding the number system. This can also help to understand why calculation techniques work and which work best for the student.

For example, sometimes I like to ask a version of the following questions:

Me: What’s 12 x 12?

Them: [remembering their 12 times tables] 144

Me: OK, what’s 13 x 12?

Them: [taking a moment to realise that that’s one extra 12] 156

Me: OK, and what’s 13 x 13?

Them: This is a rubbish game

The point here is to highlight that sometimes we don’t have a particularly deep understanding of the question beimg asked and the language of maths, to help use techniques to get to an answer smoothly. For that, my role is a little like a mechanics, in looking under the hood at the processes taking place and identifying any potential improvements.

So to explore and unblock barriers to learning, I find that building on solid foundations of from the ground up can be hugely beneficial.

Maths can be found pretty much anywhere, which gives opportunities to be creative and follow the interests of the student. From cooking to crafts, music to Minecraft, sport or space... all with a sense of fun (that's right) to help students 'see' things for themselves. Get ready for a fluency that will take you wherever you'd like to go!
