About Emmanuel

I teach with a sense of momentum. I like a lesson to have rhythm: a quick challenge, a bit of feedback, a new attempt, and every so often a moment where you play something all the way through and hear how far it has come. I watch for the point where a task stops being useful, whether it's too easy or too frustrating, and I adjust the challenge right then rather than pushing through.

When something isn't working, I don't just repeat the same instruction louder. I change the rules. I might shrink the passage to two notes, slow the tempo, take away the bow so you can focus on the left hand, or flip it around so you focus only on the bow. Changing the shape of a task usually unlocks more than another explanation would.

I'm direct about what I hear, and I'm honest when something is good. Progress doesn't need to be inflated when it can be seen. A student who has just passed a challenge they failed ten minutes earlier knows they improved, and that kind of confidence is real.

I build my violin lessons around short challenges, each with one clear goal and one simple rule. Rather than "play this étude until it's better," you might hear: "Play these four bars using only the middle third of the bow, and keep every note the same volume." That limit takes away all the other things you could worry about and points your attention at the one skill that matters right now. When you're starting out, the challenge might be drawing a straight, steady bow on one open string for a count of eight. When you're further along, it might be playing a shifting passage while your thumb stays completely relaxed. The idea is the same at every level: one target you can actually hit, then a slightly harder version.

Most violinists know this feeling. A phrase sounds fine on its own, but as soon as you add vibrato, dynamics, or speed, the intonation slips. I don't stack all of those at once. I set up a ladder of challenges. First you play the phrase in tune with no vibrato. Then you add vibrato only on the long notes. Then you add a crescendo without letting the pitch move. Each step is small enough to win, and that's why it works: your hands learn one coordination at a time instead of fighting four.

Challenges also make practice at home much clearer. I don't send you away with "practice the second movement." You leave with two or three challenges written down, each with a way to tell whether you passed. Something like: "Can you play bars 12 to 16 three times in a row with no squeak on the string crossing?" Children love this because it feels like a game with levels. Adults like it because it turns vague practice into something they can measure.

Every challenge connects back to music you actually want to play. Once a skill holds up in a challenge, we put it straight into your piece and listen to see whether it survives. If it doesn't, that tells us exactly what the next challenge should be.
