About Nico

I have been tutoring in London since 2010. I support students who find English difficult as well as those who are excelling and require additional challenge. My students consistently score A and A* at GCSE and A Level and have gone on to gain entry to highly competitive selective schools, as well as Oxford and Cambridge.

Many of my students are UK-based first language users enrolled in boarding or day schools. For some of my pupils, English is not their first language, or is not the primary language used at home. I have worked with many first language French families, as well as Dutch, Indian, Italian, and German (Swiss) among others. I have extensive experience with pupils with additional needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ASD and have worked as an examiner for Cambridge International.

While my focus is English, I also help students with essay writing in adjacent subjects, such as Economics, Politics and History. As well as delivering sessions myself, I also act as agent on behalf of selected other tutors, in English and other subjects, including Maths, Science and humanities. If you are looking for a tutor in another subject, please contact me.

I am skilled at meeting each pupil where they currently are in their progress with English, from where we move forward. My students typically develop a new enjoyment and satisfaction with English Literature and Language, as I am able to explain things to them that they've struggled or been dissatisfied with. Usually, we generate laughter, fun, and inspiration in our sessions together.

I have high levels of patience, clarity in communicating ideas, and expert knowledge of the relevant novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction texts we encounter. Having previously worked for a number of years in the SEN department of a leading London independent day school, so I also understand the demands that teachers are under and that pupils experience.

Sessions vary in format, but typically will involve reading - and engaging analytically with - written text, and generating, discussing and organising ideas. Usually, we will proceed to writing in whatever form the student is focusing on. This could be creative writing: poetry, narrative or descriptive prose, or creative non-fiction; or it could be academic-professional writing: essays, discursive or argumentative pieces, journalism, and so forth.

I am skilled across a range of forms myself, having won prizes for speech-writing in particular, and am very good at guiding students through the demands of different tasks. I am very good at big picture thinking, as well as getting into granular detail. If pupils find organising ideas, or writing hard, I break the challenge down to the point where they can manage. If pupils are capable and have capacity to grow, I stretch them to think in new ways.

I offer a free discovery call with parents, students, or family staff, in which we can explore the student's situation, goals, needs and how we could work together.

This is not a tutorial but an opportunity for parents, the student or client to get to know me a little it before committing to a first session. For me, it's an opportunity to understand the learner's position. Together, we can establish how I may be able to help. It's important that students find the best fit tutor for them and a call can quickly establish needs, possibilities and practicalities. If we do proceed to set up a first tutorial, we will "hit the ground running" so to speak.

If you'd like a discovery call, please contact me to arrange this.

For parents or clients whose spoken English is not confident, we can use caption translation during a video call. I can also answer questions over email, or WhatsApp for Business.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My chosen field is English and humanities, and I have been interested in those subjects since I was a child.

I have long had a strong ability to understand a wide variety of topic areas, not only literature, but also politics, economics, law, history, etc. This enables me to engage with students across a range of subjects.

I began working as a private tutor in 2010 and found that I enjoy the one-to-one communication, seeing students improve, and often light up about English, sometimes for the first time.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English Literature and English Language, from GCSE (or slightly before) to degree level, as well as English language skills for native speakers, and speakers of English as an Additional Language. I work with teenagers, as well as adult learners.

In addition, I offer university application coaching, from subject and university selection, through to interview, including Oxford and Cambridge entry.

I like helping students develop their critical thinking skills, and their ability to articulate themselves, as well as broadening their general and subject knowledge.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I received good English teaching at school, from people who pushed me to excel and challenged imprecise thinking. My English teachers at school certainly had a passion for their subject, and were good at transmitting it.

At Cambridge, I was taught in one-to-one and seminar settings, by academics who are leaders in their field, including Dr Ann Stillman, Dr Robert Macfarlane, the late Professor Howard Erskine-Hill, Dr Katrin Ettenhuber, Dr Mark Wormald, and Dr Colin Burrow, among others. I can think of moments with each of these people in which my thinking skills took a step forward, or new ways of understanding the world opened up.

Moreover, the example of these academics was one of kindness and generosity, which I aim to bring into my own tutoring now.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Based on my experience of what works, and having received tutoring myself, as a child, at Cambridge, and as an adult learner, I think some qualities of a good tutor include:

    - The ability to put yourself in the shoes of the student, and adapt to their needs.

    - What I call "life energy" (often called passion for the subject) to transmit confidence and enthusiasm to the student.

    - Being well organised, with ready access to the required teaching materials and exercises.

    - Good knowledge of the requirements of the task (exam, application, mission).

    - Critical acuity, to test and challenge students' thinking.

    - Strong ability to understand, absorb, clarity, and reflect back to students what they write and say.

    - Curiosity about a wide range of subjects.

    - A sense of humour and fun.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember my interviews for Cambridge well. One question I was asked was "What is the pleasure we derive from witnessing tragedy?" I didn't have an answer to this, but I knew the plays Hamlet and Othello well, so I searched my mind for a piece of evidence to start with, and began to build an argument, speaking my thinking out loud, adding ideas as I went. In this way, the interviewer could hear my thought process, and engage with me to develop it. I discovered that I could answer a novel question by thinking on my feet, provided I had a good evidence base to draw on.

This ability to reason out loud (and on paper), put ideas together, make connections, and build arguments is at the core of studying English literature, and I try and guide my students in this skill every day.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge with tutoring English Literature is also one of its pleasures: that is, the wide variety of texts. Unlike with Mathematics or Physics, where the curriculum is fairly stable (albeit with some variation), in English each new student may come with new texts that the tutor is supposed to be familiar with, or even expert in. In this regard, experience over more than a decade helps a lot, as by this point I have become skilled at mastering texts quickly, and moreover have experienced many of them already.

Aware of this, I try to help my students cut through the texts they study and get at the core of them, so that they maximise their resources and effectiveness.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While I like the variety of literary forms, have a passion for plays in particular. I value the dense communication required of a good play, as well as its reliance on speech and visual communication. One day, I would like to write a play myself.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Some people are natural communicators, and have high levels of empathy, patience, and the ability to "hold the space" for others. Couple this with a taste for high standards, a sense of humour and fun, and the ability to bring out the best in other people, and you have a Superprof. I put myself in that category, as I have that blend of skills and ability.
