About Alexander
Hello, I’m Alex!
I am а charismatic, patient, and reliable tutor / mentor with 15 years' experience.
I hold a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law (Distinction) from City University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Theatre Directing from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), and a MA (Cantab) in History of Art from Downing College, Cambridge.
I love tutoring and mentoring because I genuinely enjoy helping students grow in confidence and achieve things they did not think possible. I know that academic success is rarely just about intelligence. It is about finding the right approach, building resilience, and having someone who understands how to support you through challenges. Whether you are aiming for top grades, entrance exams, interviews, or simply greater confidence, I aim to provide supportive, engaging, enjoyable and tailored guidance.
Alongside my work as a tutor / mentor, I am currently training to become a barrister. Previously, I spent over a decade working as a professional theatre director, helping people build confidence, communicate effectively, and perform under pressure. During my theatre career I worked in London’s West End (with Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart), at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, at Theatre Royal Bath, on national UK Tour, at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough (with Sir Alan Ayckbourn), the Orange Tree Theatre in London, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and off-Broadway in New York City.
My legal advocacy training and theatre background makes me well-placed to offer tutoring/mentoring in public speaking and confidence building for interviews alongside academic support with exam preparation.

My approach to tutoring and mentoring is centred on building confidence, curiosity, and independent thinking alongside strong academic results. Every student learns differently, so I tailor sessions to individual needs, strengths, and goals rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
Drawing on my experience as a tutor, mentor, award-winning advocate, and former theatre director, I aim to create engaging, supportive, fun lessons that challenge students while helping them feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Whether preparing for exams, interviews, entrance assessments, or building subject confidence, my goal is always to help students make measurable progress and develop skills that last beyond the classroom.
During my own schooling, I was taught by private tutors. I know first-hand what teaching techniques are intellectually stimulating, lasting and rewarding in the one-to-one academic environment. Vitally, my approach is designed to be an antidote from the formal atmosphere of school. I create an environment which is simultaneously fun and educative while maintaining а firm grasp of the analytical tools which are essential for a holistic understanding of а variety of subjects from primary to advanced levels.

Approximately 85% of my Oxbridge candidates win their places.

I am writing to highly recommend Alex as a tutor. Over the past year, Alex has provided outstanding academic support to my two sons in English and other subjects. Alex is an exceptional educator who tailors lessons to the individual needs of the student. With his guidance, our son successfully achieved a place at one of London’s top academic schools.
Alex tutored my daughter for her A-level Art History. He was fantastic! The lessons were very well planned, thought-provoking, and brought the art to life. My daughter really enjoyed the lessons. It became her favourite A-level by far, and this was due to Alex's tuition.
I asked her for feedback to inform this review. She said the lessons were amazing and there was no way she could have achieved an A without them.
Alex is very professional and was great at tailoring content to whichever part of the sylabus my daughter was struggling with.
I highly recommend Alex to other parents.Alex tutored my daughter in preparing for her interview and application to Cambridge to read Art History. She enjoyed her tutoring sessions with him and found them inspiring. I would absolutely recommend Alex as a tutor.
Alex Lass has been guiding our daughter through A-levels a few years ago and he made the decisive difference to going it on her own. It was Alex`s focus on structuring responses that has benefitted our daughter the most - and this is a legacy that she benefits from to these university days.
Alex was a wonderful inspiration to Antonia who had struggled with poor mental health after the sudden death of her father. He encouraged and supported her in her first year at The Courtauld studying History of Art, helping her to structure her essays into clear and cogent arguments. He also gave her the confidence to express her own individual thoughts based on her extensive reading. I could not recommend Alex more highly.
I am a professionally qualified accountant. Clear, concise communication is essential in my role, especially when I advocate for solutions to issues facing my client organisations. Alex helped me sharpen how I structure my thinking and oral presentation, focusing on the key issues and expressing them in pithy, persuasive and precise statements. The impact has been noticeable: I am more confident in meetings, my recommendations land more effectively, and collaboration with colleagues and clients is smoother day to day.
Alex is engaging, compassionate, and experienced. He worked so patiently and conscientiously with my son Zack, who has ADHD and anxiety, and he got Zack’s quirks immediately. We’ve had a few residential tutors over the past few years to give both my sons support in their weaker subjects, and Alex is by far the best tutor we’ve come across in the range of subjects he covered.
Alex and I discussed a priority list of subjects, topics, and a timeline beforehand and specific techniques to keep Zack focused. He progressed through each one methodically, giving Zack breaks when he lost focus and always following a systematic routine to ensure Zack knew exactly what the targets were each session. He slowed down when he felt Zack hadn’t grasped a topic properly and adjusted the timetable to cover the most important areas of the syllabus that he thought Zack would struggle to cover on his own. He was calm, patient, systematic, and an absolute pleasure to have stay.
Being older and more experienced than the graduates we’ve had in the past and yet still enjoying tutoring as a counterpoint to his Barrister study, it was clear that Alex found it rewarding and enjoys the one-to-one dynamic of tutoring students.View more recommendations

I gladly offer a free 30-minute introductory call / consultation / chemistry test with parents and/or potential tutees/mentees themselves to discuss objectives, goals, challenges, and how I may be able to help.
The relationship between tutor/mentor and tutee/mentee is unique and can be incredibly rewarding for all parties. Although I would love to support everyone who asks, I may not be the right fit! It is good to try and assess this at the outset.
After our initial conversation, I will prepare a bespoke strategy of sessions and additional activities which are academically challenging, creative, and enjoyable. I offer a focused, engaging, inspirational experience tailored to the goals of each individual student.
Alongside weekly sessions for learners of all ages (in-person or online), I have extensive experience of homeschooling and intensive residential roles living and working with families in the UK and internationally (Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and India).
NB. The initial free 30-minute session is not a tutorial.
