About Franco
I am a polymath, knowledgeable both in natural and social sciences, who has focused on the areas of sustainability, innovation and social studies of energy through different disciplines. My particular focus has been on sustainable energy transitions.
After graduating with honors in Chemical Engineering I was awarded an MPhil in Sustainable Development at Cambridge University. I am currently enrolled in a PhD at the Science Policy Research Unit at Sussex University, a top ten global think tank in science and technology policy (see (concealed information)
After spending my first PhD year in the area of International Relations focusing on political economy I moved to Science and Technology Studies (STS) as an area of research. STS has allowed me to engage in sustainability studies at the intersection of natural and social sciences. Through this PhD I have engaged with the disciplines of anthropology, geography and studies of society and technology focusing on the politics, political economy and political ecology of sustainability transitions, particularly energy transitions.
I have assisted lecturing and marking at masters level at Sussex University's Science Policy Research Unit on Energy Policy. Before my PhD I have mentored and guided graduate students at Cambridge University's Judge Business School in sustainability and innovation consultancy projects in the module of Management of Technology and Innovation.
I have six years of international industry experience as technology principal analyst in clean energy technologies including a two year European Commission funded regional project on electromobility clusters. During this period of my career I participated in emerging energy technology forums in Europe, the Americas and Asia where I lectured business executives and wrote related technology reports. Some of my reports on emerging energy storage technologies have been quoted by The Economist, Bloomberg and Financial Times (see (concealed information)
I have volunteered for sustainability grassroots initiatives such as the UK's Community Energy Coalition.
