About Tori

I am a certified educator with nearly 10 years of experience. I hold a valid Indiana teacher's license in the following areas- general elementary (K-6th grades), middle school language arts (5th-9th grades), reading (5th-12th grades) and special education-mild interventions (PreK-12th grades). I have completed training and a practicum in the Orton Gillingham method through the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana. Since becoming a teacher, I have taught and worked with grades 2nd-8th in roles such as classroom teacher, special education teacher and language arts/reading teacher. While in a school setting, I worked with students who had many different needs and disabilities including autism, mild/moderate cognitive disabilities, specific learning disabilities and emotional disabilities. Since I began my journey as a tutor in October of last year, I have worked with students who have executive functioning difficulties and provided reading intervention such as Orton Gillingham to students with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia. My successes that I like to share include compliments by parents who let me know how much my services helped their child grow in confidence, and my 7th graders achieving a pass rate of nearly 75% on the very first ILEARN ELA state assessment. I love helping children to grow both academically and emotionally while finding that spark to become lifelong learners.

When a student who is having reading difficulties comes to me, my first step is generally to gather data about what might be causing problems. I do this by interviewing and/or getting observations from the student, the parent(s) and if possible the child's teacher(s). During our first session together, I do an evaluation called the GE. This assessment gives additional insight into areas such as letter/sound recognition, spelling, multisyllabic word decoding and even sight words. The combination of data from the GE and observations/interviews allows me to formulate my first steps. At the end of each lesson, I review my notes and decide where to go next. I don't use a "one size fits all" approach where every student who comes to me works on the same concepts. My lessons are diagnostic and prescriptive based on student needs. My approach to teaching is to make it student centered, engaging and meaningful. I'm also a firm believer in making it multisensory so it can be more easily transferred to the long term memory. Each of my lessons include a review from the previous lesson that is then linked to our new material. I make it a priority to find reading material that the student will enjoy and find interesting that can be used during the lesson as well. I'm a very positive and encouraging person and am always praising my students for what they have done correctly. Learning should be a positive experience and never based on shame or fear. My philosophy is that mistakes are a part of learning not something for which to be criticized.
