About Maria
I am a cellist and experienced teacher based in Scotland, offering lessons to children and adults at all levels, from complete beginners to advanced players. I hold an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a teaching qualification. Alongside teaching, I work as a freelance cellist in orchestral, chamber and solo settings. My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual goals and interests. I focus on developing a solid technique, a good sound and musical confidence, while also working on repertoire, interpretation and musicianship. I can also help students prepare for exams, auditions, concerts and other performances. Whether you are starting from scratch, returning to the cello after a break or looking to take your playing to a higher level, I will adapt the lessons to your needs and help you make steady progress.

Here’s what you can expect from my cello lessons:
Choosing an instrument
If you are looking for your first cello or considering an upgrade, I can advise you on choosing an instrument that suits your needs and budget.
Posture and technique
We will work on finding a natural and comfortable way of playing, taking into account your individual build and physical predispositions. I place particular emphasis on using the body and its natural weight efficiently, rather than relying on unnecessary tension or force.
Left-hand technique
We will work on hand position, intonation, shifting and fingerboard technique, developing accuracy, flexibility and confidence across the instrument.
Bow technique
I teach a natural and efficient approach to the bow, covering bow hold, contact point, weight, speed and different bow strokes. We will explore how these elements work together to create a rich, expressive sound.
Musicianship and interpretation
Lessons can include work on phrasing, articulation, sound, style and interpretation, alongside repertoire suited to your level and interests.
Music reading and theory
For students who need it, lessons also cover note reading, sight-reading and the music theory needed to understand and perform the repertoire.
How to practise
Learning how to practise effectively is an important part of becoming an independent musician. I will help you develop practice strategies that allow you to solve problems efficiently and make consistent progress between lessons.
ABRSM exam preparation
Students preparing for ABRSM exams can receive support with repertoire, scales, sight-reading, aural skills and performance preparation.

Perfect! Maria was great in explaining how to play correctly , as I new cello player , Maria was fantastic in explaining how to play open chords correctly.
Perfect! I found Maria to be very generous with sharing her knowledge and skills; she could see clearly where I needed assistance and instructions were delivered clearly and in a helpful manner. A tutor who will suit all ages and for me, an adult beginner, she was ideal. very pleasant young woman indeed. Thank you Maria.
- Stella was a very pleasant and delightful person to work with. She quickly understood everything I explained and had a kind, approachable personality that made the lesson enjoyable. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to teach her!Maria's response :
