About Allison

Hi y'all! I'm Allison. I am a teacher, PhD student in Law, and a pug mom.

For the last ten years, I have taught public speaking to students from age 8 to 65. I am a certified public speaking instructor, a lecturer, and a former speech and debate competitor and coach. I completed my Bachelors at Rice University (Texas, USA) and my Masters at the University of Oxford and the LSE.

I have been a teacher in the past, and I feel comfortable with any level of student, as well as offering professional guidance on presentations and interviews. Additionally, I served on the student admissions council of a top 15 ranked American university and tutored high school students for college admissions tests. I'd love to offer my assistance however I can!

Have you ever stood up to present to a classroom, a boardroom, or your local council and then suddenly forgot everything you knew? Or maybe you struggle to find the right words to communicate to your boss, colleagues, friends, or family? Perhaps, your child is struggling to express themselves to their teachers or classmates, or you are struggling to have impromptu interactions in public.

If these scenarios are familiar, I might be the right tutor for you!

My teaching method is based on your needs. I have taught 1-to-1 basic classes that cover practices of effective public speaking; simulation classes of interviews, speeches, and business management; and individual and group lessons to children on confidence when speaking or singing.

I have worked with children as young as 8 and adults working in business, energy, healthcare, hospitality, government, influencing, consulting, and professional sport. From students with crippling presentation anxiety to nearly polished speakers, there is no public speaking barrier we can't work through as a team.

For my lessons, I do a consultation (free) lesson with all students where we talk through your struggles and my teaching approach. My not-so-secret approach is that we make it fun! I want to know your concerns are and tailor a plan accordingly, and along the way, there will be laughs, mistakes, and learning!

  • 1) How long have you been interested in the field of well-being and are you practicing?

I understand well-being to include the ways we prepare ourselves for the stress and anxiety of public speaking, presentations, and professional interactions. As a teacher and coach of these areas, I have been active in this field for 10 years. I received my teaching certification for public speaking in 2013, and have been working in public or private positions since then.
  • 2) Tell us what your discipline can bring to people's lives.

I strongly believe that confidence and clarity in public speaking comes, in part, from relieving the stress and anxiety almost all of my students experience. The lessons and exercises I teach equip students to present themselves through understanding and controlling their breath, voice, and body language, as well as their brains. My field of teaching is here to help students embrace their talents and express themselves in their personal and professional lives with ease.
  • 3) Could you provide some instant top tips to help us feel good in body and mind?

When you are standing up to deliver an answer or a speech, remember:

    1. Take a deep breath: imagine the oxygen reaching all the way down your body to your fingertips and toes. Then, exhale out the nerves you feel, pushing them powerfully out.

    2. Stand tall: feet planted firmly, shoulders relaxed with your arms at your side, head forward and eyes focused on your audience. Your body language is half the battle!

    3. People are lucky to hear your ideas: say they loud and slow. You are here to OWN THE ROOM. This is your time.

    4. Keep breathing: take a pause, and with it a deep breath. The audience needs the break to digest what you are saying, and your brain needs the oxygen.
  • 4) How would you describe your method as a practitioner?

My method is all about you! It sounds a bit strange, but I teach bespoke lessons based on your strengths and weaknesses. Nothing is pre-made, and every lesson, exercise, and tip will be customized for your learning. Plus, my secret? We make it fun! Public speaking and presentations can be fun, and we will train your brain to see them that way.
  • 5) With experience, are there things you have learned or unlearned about yourself or others?

Definitely! Teaching is a constantly humbling profession. I am always learning what works and what doesn't work for my students, and how differently each of them learns from one another. Most importantly, I have realised that I am capable of responding to my students and helping all different types of people grow their skills. This has required me to think more creatively, and to remember that sometimes I will need a new approach.
  • 6) Do you have a role model, a person who really inspired you?

My role model is undoubtably my mom. She taught me from a very young age that women are capable of anything they desire to achieve. She believes that young girls need confidence taught to them, and would sit me down to memorise and perform poetry. Through this, she taught me the power of my own voice and helped me find my passion in public speaking.
  • 7) How do you personally relax; what methods work for you?

I find breathing exercises and a working on a puzzle book most relaxing. I use the breathing strategies I teach my students daily, and strongly believe in practicing what you preach (or teach)!
  • 8) Tell us about a memorable lesson

I have a wonderful young woman who I am coaching in public speaking. This week she was able to stand up in front of me and deliver a mini-speech on her three best qualities. Just a few weeks ago, this was unthinkable. She struggled to make eye contact with me and answer basic questions. I have absolutely loved watching her grow to embrace and communicate her brilliance to the world!
