About Benjamin
Hi! My name is Ben. I've been working in education for over 15 years. I began my teaching career in South Korea in 2010 where I taught English in an elementary school academy.
I went on to receive my TESOL Diploma from Vancouver Community College and began teaching English as a foreign language to visitors to Canada in private institutes and academies in downtown Vancouver. I also taught English as a foreign language at academies in Córdoba, Argentina. During my time living in Argentina, I became fluent in Spanish. I have now been speaking Spanish for over ten years and am currently back living in Argentina. Spanish is part of my daily life. It is also one of my greatest passions and I continue to be intrigued by the intricacies of the language and the variety of Latin American and Spanish cultures.
I completed a Bachelor of Education at Simon Fraser University in 2018 and taught social studies, ELL, and Spanish in the Burnaby School District from 2019 to 2024. I am currently completing a Master's Degree in Education through Queen's University in Ontario.
Over the course of my career, I have taught hundreds of students, helping them to improve their language skills and confidence in both English and Spanish. I have worked to continuously improve my skills and knowledge as a teacher, and I am certain that I can help you to attain your language goals, and that we will have fun and laughs along the way.

I utilize a variety of language teaching methods including TPRS (teaching proficiency through reading and storytelling), CI (comprehensible input), and TPR (total physical response).
I also use more traditional language teaching methods like listening and reading comprehension activities, explanations of grammar and vocabulary, writing activities, and pronunciation practice.
My emphasis is always on communicative skills and I prefer to focus on speaking. I like to utilize authentic texts, videos, and music in my classes. In my experience, most people learn Spanish because they want to communicate with native Spanish speakers in an authentic context. I strive to make my classes fun and engaging. I believe that learning must be fun in order for students to remain motivated. My students often comment to me that my classes fly by. I have taught hundreds of secondary school students, taking them from the beginner level (A1) in grade 8, to upper intermediate (B2) or even advanced (C1) by the time they reach the end of grade 12.
In a typical beginner lesson, we would begin by learning common greetings, introductions, and farewells. I want beginner students to be able to have a basic introductory conversation in fluid Spanish. I place a lot of emphasis on speaking and practice these skills with my students extensively. I would model the pronunciation of questions and responses for you and have you repeat after me. We would then take part in practice conversations until you feel confident responding to a variety of questions with different phrases or responses. The final activity in the lesson would be a listening comprehension activity. I would share a list of comprehension questions with you to prepare you for the video. We would then watch a funny video where the target language is used and work to respond to the questions.
In a typical intermediate lesson, we would begin with speaking activities talking about how we're doing. I would then introduce a topic, for example the present continuous tense for describing what people are doing. I would begin with a comprehensible input activity describing a photo or cartoon image of a busy scene, thereby modelling the grammatical structure and vocabulary for you. I would then explain the grammatical structure and we would practice conjugating skills until you can effectively structure descriptive sentences using the target language structure. We would then get practice describing what people are doing in different scenes. We would finish the class by discussing what we have to or what we plan on doing later in the day.
