About Philip
Since I first saw the way the right record at the right time can change the whole atmosphere of a room at house parties as a child, I have chased down as much music as I can and nothing makes me happier than playing it for people and helping others find their technical and artistic confidence as selectors.
I graduated from the hifi stack in the corner of the living room to a hand-me-down pair of battered belt drive turntables when I was 13. I haven’t stopped mixing records since. This led me to being the co-founder and resident of seminal queer dance party Menergy in Glasgow and playing sets in Edinburgh, Manchester, London, Lyon and beyond.
Playing music to make people dance and feel happy is the best job in the world and my goal is to help you acquire the technical foundation you need to do that job as best you can while maintaining a passion for the craft and for the tunes.

I am offering lessons on both vinyl and digital DJ-ing whether you are a total beginner who wants to get to grips with mixing basics and build a foundation in the basics of music theory to support your performances or you already know your way around a pair of decks and want support to really hone your techniques and curation in a professional studio with club-grade hardware.
I believe that DJ-ing is at its best when treated as an artistic practice, centring the music you love with the technical skills to make it sound its best and get people moving. To get you there I offer a free of charge hour-long consultation to discuss your experience and goals and to allow us to build a bespoke lesson plan covering some combination of the following:
- song structure and musical phrasing
- the basics of mixing digital music and/or vinyl and understanding tempo, bpm and the beat grid
- Centre specific advanced mixing techniques
- Navigating a pair of turntables and/or Pioneer CDJ3000 digital player
- The anatomy of a DJ mixer
- Safely managing EQ and gain
- Set building and preparation
- Managing your music in Rekordbox
- FX (on-board and external processors)
I have a fully equipped DJ studio in my East London home from which I teach. The studio has Technics 1210s vinyl turntables, Pioneer CDJ 3000 digital players and Pioneer DJ controllers as well as an Allen and Heath Xone 96 club mixer and Genelec studio monitors. I would encourage students to bring their own monitoring headphones but these can also be provided.
I am more than happy to work with you in lessons using your own music. However, I also have an extensive collection of techno, electro, house, trance and hard house (among many other genres) on both vinyl and digital format that can be used to teach with. For total beginners, I would recommend that we work together initially using some house and techno four to the floor classics while you find your feet.
For more advanced students I also offer supported studio time for those who would like to practise with some help on hand should they need it.
