About Mark
As an educator deeply committed to empowering students through language and
literature, I have cultivated a passion and skill for enfranchising learners of all ages and
backgrounds. My philosophy of education is rooted in the belief that fostering critical thinking,
clear communication, and cultural understanding is essential for navigating the complexities of
the modern world. Learning how to learn remains a key reason why writing is an important skill
to practice.
I firmly believe that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and securing a stake
in the future. In my experience teaching diverse populations – old and young learners,
immigrants and he, and pencil and paper writers and digital-age students - I have witnessed the
transformative power of education in shaping minds and expanding perspectives. By engaging
students in the study of languages and literature from various cultures, I encourage them to
examine diverse human viewpoints and develop critical analyses. Incorporating everything from
classic Platonic dialogues to the latest viral memes helps to foster these skills. A continuation of
the Socratic method that creates an environment where students can explore complex ideas,
challenge assumptions, and articulate their thoughts, combined with a careful balance of
emotional intelligence (EQ) that assures empathy and openness.
In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, integrating technology into education is
imperative. I recognize the potential of the tools that AI assistants have for research; editing
software has stark ability to rapidly turn messy writing sparkling. By harnessing these
technologies, I empower students to conduct research, generate counterarguments, and engage in
meaningful discourse. Moreover, I am committed to meeting students where they are, adapting
my teaching strategies to accommodate their individual language needs and leveraging group
activities and collaborative work demands to foster a culture of teamwork and communication.
These generative systems, driven by Large Language Models, have their origins in the
field of computational linguistics and the theory of generative grammar. Editing tools like
Grammarly have become complete rewriting tools and are now commonplace. The pragmatic
implications of this in my classrooms has been another gradation of the inquiry/research process.
Many students lack the insight to use these new methods constructively and ethically.
Additionally, how young learners were impacted sociologically and psychologically by the
COVID-19 pandemic and its lockdowns have benefits and risks within this environment: they
are more open to new ideas than possibly any preceding generation but also more limited and
closed off interpersonally. Group activities are something that take extra effort and
encouragement now, but they are more important than ever for collaborative work demands. This
goes as well for partnered work and dialectic development -an emphasis on Socratic ignorance is
vital when so many have suffered severe learning loss.
Fortifying the very novel task of prompt generation, that combats the ‘garbage in,
garbage out’ dilemma in various prompt is crucial for this and something I have practiced before
any bots reached mainstream use with the search engine optimization and brand awareness and
this investigation in the tradition of philology. Computational linguistics, specifically artificial
intelligence (grammar) grew out of universal (natural) grammar, or UG.
And so, what the rhetorical discipline (writing and thinking) requires is a skillset that
hinges on perspective shift (i.e. Whorfian hypothesis), conceptual analysis and precise
communication. The Socratic method – preserved in things like Plato’s dialogues – offers as
much complex criticism as Gale’s Opposing Viewpoints or Greenhaven Publishing’s Current
Controversies.
In addition to developing linguistic and analytical skills, I highlight the importance of
cultural understanding in language/literacy studies. In a border community like El Paso,
bilingualism and cultural diversity are integral aspects of daily life. I strive to create an inclusive
learning environment where students can explore the intersection of language, culture, and
identity. By examining how people communicate inner ideas and connect across languages and
cultures, students gain a deeper appreciation for diversity and develop the empathy and cultural
competence necessary for global and digital citizenship.
In conclusion, I am deeply invested in imparting the skills necessary for students to thrive
in an increasingly interconnected world. By fostering critical thinking, clear communication, and
cultural understanding, I believe students can still be empowered to navigate the challenges and
opportunities of the modern age. I am eager to contribute my expertise and dedication to your
institution and would be honored to be considered for a position where I can continue to make a
meaningful impact on the lives of students.

I believe in making learning an interactive and enjoyable experience. My teaching method is rooted in a personalized approach, where I take time to understand each student's unique strengths, challenges, and learning style. Using a combination of clear explanations, visual aids, real-world examples, and hands-on exercises, I help students grasp complex and wide-varying concepts with ease.
I also emphasize active learning—encouraging questions, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This approach not only improves understanding but also builds confidence and independent learning skills that students can carry beyond the classroom. It will allow our working relationship to reach its highest potential.
Warm-up and Review (5-10 minutes)
We start each session with a brief review of what we covered in the last lesson to reinforce key concepts and identify any areas of difficulty.
Concept Introduction (15-20 minutes)
I introduce new material through clear, structured explanations, breaking down difficult topics into manageable steps. I use visual aids and examples that are relevant to the student’s interests and real-life situations to make the material more engaging.
Practice and Application (15-20 minutes)
We work through practice problems, exercises, or case studies to ensure that the student can apply what they’ve learned. I encourage critical thinking and allow the student to explore different methods of solving problems.
Q&A and Feedback (5-10 minutes)
The final part of each lesson is dedicated to addressing any questions or uncertainties the student may have. I provide constructive feedback and offer tips for improvement, making sure they leave the lesson feeling confident and clear on the topic.
Tailored Learning Experience: I don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. Every lesson is customized to meet the individual needs of each student, ensuring they get the most out of our time together.
Empathy and Patience: I understand that every student learns at their own pace. My patient and supportive teaching style helps students feel comfortable and encouraged, no matter how challenging the subject may seem.
Proven Success: I have a track record of helping students improve their grades, boost their test scores, and develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they study.
High School Students: Struggling with subjects like history, literature, writing or ELAR? I offer tutoring for a variety of high school subjects, helping you build the foundation for success in exams and essays.
University Students: Whether you're working toward your degree in STEM, business, or the humanities, I can help clarify complex theories, assist with assignments, and prepare for exams - university-level composition is a specialized practice that I have been engaged with for many years on both sides of the submission.
Adult Learners & Professionals: Looking to expand your skills or need help with professional development? I can assist with subjects such as language learning, data analysis, writing, and more.
