About Sam
Illustrator and graphic designer. Fine art background with 20 years of figure drawing experience and deep knowledge of comic books and contemporary figurative painting. My work includes editorial portraits, illustration and character designs for board games.
I don't believe in gatekeeping or elitism in art and have reverence for the craft wherever it appears in museums, comics, manga, cartoons and all kinds of pulp. I believe fun is important to learning and love engaging with my students on whatever subjects excite them the most.

My process is to talk with students to learn about the type of art that excites them and to work with them to discover the exercises and subjects that will train them to close the gap between what they imagine and what their hands can create.
My background is in fine art, with additional training in industrial design sketching. I believe a person can learn as much from the right comic book or poster as they can from a renaissance painting and that observation and reference are everything.
