About Sophia

I specialise in one-to-one tutoring and teach students from age 10-17 who gain confidence and technique through their customised lessons.

At the moment I am studying International Relations and Business Management at Queen Mary University of London. Before this I went to Blundells School in Devon. Here I received AAB in my A-levels and was also awarded a diploma by NEA in acting and have a grade 8 distinction in both a recital and in acting. There I was heavily linked to the drama department coaching and helping with stage management.

Being at university means that I have very flexible hours and can cater to most timings!

I specialise in devising pieces and improvisation and now tutor students in both performance and public speaking. Skills learnt in these lessons can be very helpful for anybody wishing to better their communication skills, Whether this be to help with interview technique, presenting or just overall confidence. As debate and public speaking captain last year I felt that these skills were extremely transferable and I can help with both of these disciplines as well.

I am available to work remotely (via zoom, google meets etc.) part time; afternoons and evenings. I am also happy to travel to mutual locations, such as libraries. I can be flexible with the length and exact timings of sessions.

I offer lessons for
- A-Level theatre studies AQA
- NEA exams
- Advice on speeches
- Confidence with public speaking
- General interest in theatre and its periods and practitioners

I can adapt these lessons to each individual and exactly how each student wishes to work.

I am new at teaching and I am willing to put in the work. I want each student to feel catered for and that their interests are considered. In the past when learning speech and drama myself, I found that the lessons that worked best were those that were in partnership; the teacher and I both leaving the lesson with genuine curiosity and a eagerness to do our own research and add our own contributions.

Most importantly though, I want each student to leave with a smile, feeling calmer more confident and inspired.

In our first session we will:
1. Get to know each other better and talk about your goals and work preferences.
2. Look at a monologue (or other form of spoken word) together to assess where you're at creatively. And also, if comfortable, explore theatre through improvisation.
3.You can ask anything you wish.

SPEECH AND DRAMA
My favourite of the exams, this includes both a poem and prose. This helps students develop communication, clear speech and encourages a love for literature and drama. Each student would have to memorise a poem and a piece of prose and discuss each of these pieces with the examiner. In the later grades students must also do a sight-reading and discuss the vocal preparation they did for each piece.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
This involves writing and performing a speech or multiple speeches based on a brief and, in the later exams, delivering an impromptu speech that has been prepared in 15 minutes. In the more advanced levels, students must also discuss with the examiner the contents of the talk, the specifics of a public speaking event and the vocal skills necessary in public speaking. This exam is excellent in nurturing vital skills such as presenting, debating and performing.

DEVISED DRAMA
Devising is where students are able to have the most freedom in these exams - exploring topics that interest them. This allows for a student to engage with a text that no other exam can offer whilst equally allowing their creativity to flourish. Students are examined on their roles, research and preparation into each piece along with their performance of their pieces.

VERSE SPEAKING
This exam explores poetry at its core, examining students on their poetry choices and range in both period and theme. Very useful as an extra curricular when applying for English but also just great fun when working specifically on vocals.

RECITAL
A recital exam is another one of my personal favourites as it allows students to explore many different forms of spoken word and allows those who struggle to think on their feet gain access to those higher grades. Again allowing them to explore their own interests in the context of drama. This is a continuous exam without a conversation with the examiner. The content is judged based on how conclusive the programme is

ACTING
The most classic exam of them all, an acting award will consist of learning an extract of theatre and performing it. Along with this students need to know about the play that their piece is taken from along with ideas surrounding modulation and stage presence.

Ultimately whatever a student wants I am happy to offer. If exams aren’t their thing then that will not be a route that is discussed. Acting and drama can be so personally subjective that I would never wish to push anyone further than what they’re willing to explore themselves. Particularly as theatre can be very personal I would want to make our sessions equally as personal.
