About Ryan
Motown records played constantly throughout my childhood, their steady grooves quietly teaching me rhythm long before I ever touched a guitar. Shoegaze arrived much later, discovered during university through a roommate who loved layering sound until it blurred together beautifully. Balancing something so rhythmically precise with something so texturally loose taught me real versatility as a player. That versatility now shapes how comfortably I teach both total beginners and rusty returning players.
Working with first-timers alongside returning weekend players means constantly shifting expectations depending on who's sitting across from me. I never assume returning players remember everything, nor do I rush first-timers just because they're technically starting from scratch. What I enjoy most is watching a returning player's old confidence quietly resurface after just a few encouraging sessions. That gradual return to comfort often feels more rewarding than teaching something entirely new.
I still play both Motown-inspired grooves and shoegaze textures regularly, mostly during relaxed evening practice at home. Staying connected to both keeps my teaching genuine and rooted in real, current musical feel. Lessons often lean toward whichever style helps a student reconnect with why they wanted to play guitar in the first place. My hope remains simple, that every student leaves feeling closer to their own sound.

Returning weekend players often carry rusty fingers and half forgotten chord shapes, so early sessions focus on gently reawakening old muscle memory. First time learners, by contrast, start from true zero, learning finger placement before anything resembling a real chord appears. Motown grooves enter early for both groups, their steady, danceable rhythm making timing feel natural rather than forced. Shoegaze textures follow later, introducing washed out, layered chords once basic control feels comfortable.
As sessions progress, I contrast Motown's tight, groove locked rhythm guitar against shoegaze's dreamy, effect heavy strumming, letting students feel two very different approaches to feel. Returning players often rediscover confidence quickly once old habits are gently corrected rather than criticised outright. First timers instead build slowly, celebrating each new chord as genuine progress rather than a small formality. Listening exercises stay light throughout, helping both groups absorb tone and groove beyond just correct finger placement.
I keep reminding students that comfort matters more than speed, especially early on or after a long break. Rushing tends to reintroduce the same shaky habits that returning players are actively trying to shed. Songs tied to personal nostalgia or current taste stay central, keeping practice emotionally engaging rather than purely mechanical. My focus throughout remains steady, helping every student rebuild or build real confidence at their own pace.
