About Gideon
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been a musician for over twenty five years, and I have been a professional drum tutor for the last thirteen years. I spent seven years as the full time Drum teacher for a well known Yorkshire Performing Arts College. I have played, taught and run workshops in the UK, Europe and America. I have played a wide variety of different musical styles, ranging from Rock and Blues to Reggae, World music and Samba to Jungle and Drum 'n' Bass, in many different settings from corporate events to sharing billing with legends such as Nina Simone, Gary Moore, Van Morrison and Booker T, in my blues days. More recently playing live Drum and Bass I have supported Pendulum, Skream and Prime Cuts Scratch Perverts, with Live d'n'b outfit Hayashi.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
For the drums: On the road and in the woodshed until I met Paul Smith, a consummate professional and teacher.
My Teaching Qualification: Access to Music Blackburn College.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently teaching in two primary schools where some pupils are just starting out and some are starting to flourish. I have private pupils of whom one is a mature beginner who has just decided to start playing at 30 and another who has been playing 20 years and has come to me to increase his speed and fluidity around the kit. I am also preparing another pupil for her G.C.S.E music examinations.

I am a Live Drum and Bass specialist, but I play in many other styles of music as a session musician. My playing has inspired my teaching and vice versa. Drumming is my life and my privilege to share.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Drum Kit, and all aspects of Kit Drumming from playing your first rhythm to advanced stick control, foot technique and full body co-ordination.
I do not teach theory and reading as a separate subject, I use them both and teach them as part of the complete experience of learning to play the instrument and realising the learners full potential. This way reading is not a dry and daunting separate subject, but an integral part of the communication used to teach and learn the practical and fun aspects of playing and performing.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a self taught musician. My degree is in Engineering, but my teaching qualification is music specific. Instrumental Music Facilitator 2000
- How much do you charge?
£30 per hour individual lesson. Fee reduced to £25 per hour for block bookings of ten or more lessons. Large discount for group tuition, negotiable. Travel expenses will be charged for home tuition visits.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home in Leeds in my fully equipped recording/teaching studio. I also do home visit tuition, I am prepared to travel to surrounding towns in West Yorkshire, Bradford, Dewsbury, Wakefield, Castleford, Harrogate, are all within range, subject to travel expenses, I will travel up to 20 miles.
- When are you available?
I try to make myself available to accommodate the needs of my pupils. There are occasions as a musician when I am unavailable due to touring commitments, but these can be negotiated when necessary.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages. I have taught primary school children their first rhythms, and seasoned drummers to improve their technique.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I have taught Rockschool from Grade 1 up to 8 with an exceptional Distinction, Merit and Pass rate.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can tutor via Skype if it is called for.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect, so do it right get the right teacher.

In my experience with Gideon, he taught me many different skills, techniques and genres. He will open your eyes to a whole new variety of music. He helped me through Rock School grades 1 to 8, and then carried on making my skills and techniques a lot better.
Gideon is very patient, committed and thrives on success. He has been a very good role model for myself and will be to any new students.
He will make you a better all-round musician.Gideon Woods has taught me since I was in primary school, and ever since then I have stuck with him. He has the knowledge and skills to get the very best out of you and your lesson. He pushes you to your limits and is extremely passionate about his career in the music industry. If you have a specific genre of music or playing style, he will go out of his way to learn it himself and train you to get better.
Gideon continued to tutor me through my high school years, further developing my performance and music reading skills, not forgetting exam preparation and ensemble work.
Gideon is a fantastic musician and drum tutor. He improved my all round musicianship as a whole and brought my playing up to a Grade 8 standard. I would recommend him to anybody looking to learn how to play the drums from beginner level upwards, his first class tuition skills really made a difference to my playing.I began group tuition with Gideon at the age of 10. I was quickly introduced to his own course booklet, which simplified standard music notation into a much easier format.
Whilst undergoing tuition in school hours, I also attended a weekly class that Gideon ran every Saturday at a local high school. The class not only improved my music theory dramatically, but also improved my playing and performance techniques by showcasing my new drumming skills in an annual production for family and friends.I have also performed in many concerts and on a variety of records.

As a teacher Gideon is, patient, keen to help and oozes passion for music. Overall I would recommend Gideon as a teacher to anyone who wants to learn drums and be inspired to play music.
I have been playing the drums now for over 11 years and Gideon has taught me for the entirety. I have progressed musically in a way that I didn't think I could, but with Gideon's help and belief in me,
I was able obtain a Grade 8 Distinction in Drums.View more recommendations
