About Holly
I am recently retired, and after 32 years of teaching high school (grades 9-12), I miss my students! I miss the Ah-Ha moment when a student is able to relate to the motivations of a character; or when, after hours and hours, they produce that perfect essay that supports their thesis; or when they come to truly understand the perspective of the author in a piece of literature. These are the moments I miss--the lightbulb moments. I have spent many lunch hours holding group sessions with students, even some who weren't even in my classes, to listen to the fate of Macbeth, or to commiserate over Hamlet's situation, and actually realize that they too, have struggled like him. I have had students comment years later, that they will always remember the lesson "when such and such happened to so and so, in that story". I am a down to earth teacher; a mother of two adult sons of my own; and like a mother to thousands of students over the years, many of whom I am still in contact with across the country. Letting go of a profession that I have loved for all of those years has been difficult and tutoring allows me to get back to what I loved most about the profession--working with students! I used to do this with 34 students in a classroom, four times a day, and I am excited to scale down the numbers, as a tutor, to help others learn to succeed in ELA, and maybe even come to enjoy it!

ELA can be very difficult for some students, but many just need to find relevance in the lesson and the message it brings. I have taught in all types of high schools with very diverse student needs. Each student brings a different collection of needs, and it is my job to help them meet those needs.
I truly believe that it is important for students to be able to relate what they are learning to their everyday lives. With today's tech world focusing on social media, internet, and streaming platforms, it is hard for Literature, reading, and writing to compete. If students are able to learn that the gap between ELA and the tech world is not really that large, they can soon relate what they are learning, to what they are living.
As a classroom teacher, it was most important to reach every student to find out what their learning styles were, and how I could help them to comprehend most effectively, and efficiently. Now that I am looking at working one on one, or at least with smaller groups, it excites me to think that relevance will be easy to find, in an even shorter amount of time!
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and a Bachelor of Education degree. I am also Accredited and have 32 years of teaching experience in high school English classrooms. I have also continued to help and support my graduates, as they navigate university. I am looking to work with students from grades 9-12, as well as undergrads in university/college programs.

Holly is a one-of-a-kind English teacher. It honestly feels like she was born to teach. Her teaching style is all about praising the good work students do, while also pointing out areas of improvement in a kind and constructive way, always with clear examples. I remember a time when I handed in a poorly written essay without proofing it. Instead of just giving me a bad grade and moving on, she asked me to sit down with her and go over my essay together. She gave me both in-line comments and vocal feedback, and she asked me what I was trying to say so she could see things from my perspective. Then, she showed me ways I could improve. It felt like she was talking to me, not down to me. She was an English teacher for several classes at my school, and she had many late nights grading papers because she always wanted to return them with detailed feedback, and yet she still made time to meet with me. I felt respected, and I could truly see her passion for teaching. I highly recommend Holly because she is understanding, supportive, selfless and helps students grow by guiding them through their own perspective.
I was lucky to have Holly as a my high school english teacher who continued to mentor me throughout University english courses. Holly proofread my essays and offered her advice for suggested reviews. Thanks to her help, I was extremely satisfied with my grades and overall class performance.
Holly is incredibly patient with all her students, and goes out of her way to get to know you and crack a few jokes along the way to make for an enjoyable tutor experience. I highly recommend her as a teacher and mentor.Holly was my teacher from Grade 9 through Grade 12, and I can honestly say she made one of the biggest impacts on my learning. She is patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging—always finding ways to build confidence in her students. Holly doesn’t just teach the material; she teaches in a way that makes you believe in yourself. She always had helpful study tips, tricks, and strategies that made even the most difficult lessons feel manageable.
What makes Holly truly stand out is how much she cares. She takes the time to listen, to explain things clearly, and to motivate her students to do their best. Her positivity and support helped me not only succeed academically but also stay motivated through challenges. I have no doubt that anyone who has the chance to learn from Holly will feel supported, inspired, and empowered.
Holly is trustworthy, dedicated, and passionate about helping her students reach their goals, and I cannot recommend her enough as a teacher.I taught with Holly in Regina. Holly is the type of teacher that is able to push the most competent students even higher and motivate those who have never found success. She has a love of literature from all genres - mythology, Shakespeare, poetry to using the latest technology to one's advantage.
Holly's strongest attribute is her ability to form relationships with people. She breaks down barriers that students may put up and finds the way to improve and build their abilities.
And she makes learning fun!Holly is an exceptional teacher. She is extremely caring, patient, and very well liked by students. I was fortunate to work with Holly for almost a decade in an alternative High School for at-risk youth and young adults (17-22). In my capacity as a Guidance Counsellor (Student Support) I could always rely on Holly to take students under her guidance and help them overcome their learning struggles to achieve success. Holly connects easily with students, assesses their needs and learning styles, and creates interesting and engaging assignments to help them understand required outcomes and concepts. Additionally we have worked on numerous committees together and Holly has proven to be a reliable, organized colleague, and more importantly, she is creative and fun. Students always appreciate both her sense of humour and her diligent approach to breaking down concepts to be easily understood.
I highly recommend Holly as an outstanding educator. I honestly wish my own children could have had her as a teacher!
Holly was a trusted colleague for many years and has also tutored my own children. She is an excellent English teacher who brings passion and relevance to every lesson and text covered. Students love her! As a parent I knew that by connecting them with Holly I was providing my boys an outstanding support without the conflict that often happens when I try to give them academic feedback and direction myself.
Holly is a phenomenal teacher who is exceptional at helping students understand complicated or new concepts. She breaks down subject matter to support her student’s learning style, rather than regurgitating a textbook or lesson guide. She also genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed in the classroom and beyond. I still remember lessons from our Shakespeare and short story units more than a decade later. Holly taught me from 2007 to 2011 and we still keep in touch today. She has never stopped caring about me, providing guidance and mentorship long after graduation. I would not be where and who I am today without her!
