About Emily
Teaching saxophone is a deeply gratifying process where technical training meets creative freedom. My lessons begin with essential skills such as breath support, embouchure development, posture, and finger agility, all vital for long-term playing health and success. Developing a rich and expressive tone is a central focus; I guide students through articulation techniques, dynamic control, phrasing, and vibrato to help them shape their unique musical voice. Music theory and ear training are seamlessly integrated through repertoire and improvisation exercises to enhance musicianship and deepen understanding. Improvisation is fundamental to my teaching approach, introduced early and developed through simple to complex exercises that build confidence, listening skills, and creativity. Lessons are tailored to individual goals, whether students aspire to play jazz standards, blues solos, classical pieces, or modern music. I use technology, including recording devices, slow-down apps, and digital loops, to support practice and encourage creative experimentation. One of my proudest moments was helping a student transition from relying heavily on sheet music to confidently improvising and performing in a jazz ensemble. My goal is to create an encouraging, inspiring atmosphere where students feel empowered to grow technically and artistically while enjoying their saxophone journey.

My teaching method for saxophone is founded on the idea that technical skill and creative expression go hand in hand to create meaningful music.
I focus first on core techniques—breath control, embouchure development, articulation, finger dexterity, and tone quality—building a healthy and adaptable foundation for all styles. Simultaneously, I introduce music theory, ear training, and sight-reading to develop musical literacy and improvisational ability. I tailor lessons to each student’s musical tastes and goals, whether they want to master bebop lines, explore funk grooves, perform soulful ballads, or dive into contemporary pop sounds.
Improvisation is integral to my approach; I teach it through step-by-step exercises in scales, melodic shaping, rhythmic variation, and expressive phrasing, fostering creativity and confidence. I integrate technology such as recording apps, slow-downer tools, and backing tracks to enhance practice efficiency and self-awareness. Performance skills are incorporated throughout lessons, including stage presence, managing nerves, and connecting emotionally with audiences.
I cultivate a supportive, inspiring environment where students feel comfortable experimenting and learning from mistakes. A memorable experience was mentoring a student who overcame initial technical difficulties to become a confident performer featured in their community jazz band. My mission is to help students develop into technically proficient, musically expressive saxophonists who love sharing their unique voice.
