I am currently an engineering student in a gap year in Paris. My field is material mechanics, which involves physics, chemistry and mathematics at a high level. During my 5 years of graduate studies, I monitored about 30 high school students.

The experience I gained in tutoring led me to several conclusions. You must be ready to answer any student's question correctly. It is out of the question to remain stuck on an exercise at the same time as the student. That's why I only offer my services in mathematics, physics and chemistry which are in my field of expertise.
However, knowledge alone is not enough. For example, do not underestimate the state of mind of the student. As many sociological experiments have shown, confidence in one's academic abilities is a key factor for success. The unmotivated pupils, because of their previous years or months, must be regularly encouraged and strive to restore their self-confidence at the risk of seeing all other efforts reduced.
To help these students, you have to listen to them. Patience and empathy are one of my primary qualities, which I have developed all the more during the last 5 years.
