About Christopher

I’m a native British ESOL teacher with more than 20 years’ experience, teaching adults from B1 to C2.

I hold a BA (Hons), MA, PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I also have extensive experience in CAE assessment.

I teach adults from a wide range of backgrounds, from university students and general English learners to vice-presidents, CROs, partners, doctors and entrepreneurs working across finance, technology and AI. Corporate clients have included Santander, BBVA, Repsol and K&H Bank.

Alongside teaching, I work as an English-language copy editor for a Big Four firm, where precision, clarity and tone are essential.

No matter your level, my job is to make your English better.

About the lesson

**Please note: The fee you pay before contacting me is Superprof’s subscription fee and is paid to Superprof, not to me. I offer a free 30-minute assessment for students considering regular lessons. We’ll assess your level, discuss your goals and identify the best way forward.**

Your English may already be good. My job is to make it better.

Every student is different, so I start by identifying what is holding you back and what you want to achieve. We then build your lessons around those goals.

Lessons combine conversation and discussion with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, writing and authentic materials, depending on what you need. I’ll correct you when it helps, without constantly interrupting your flow.

I teach general and Business English from B1 to C2, including professional communication, presentations and interviews. I also prepare students for IELTS, Cambridge C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency and TOEFL.

Bring the English you have. We’ll build the English you need.

I have known Chris for years, and he has been helping me improve my English. Since Christopher is a writer, his command of the language and vocabulary are very sophisticated. He is a very intelligent, kind, polite, and adaptable teacher. He customizes his lessons to match what I want and what I need to improve. He is always prepared, bringing very interesting exercises, reading materials, and conversation topics to class. I have studied with many teachers before, but I enjoy Christopher’s lessons much more. As a result, I am making progress much more effectively than I used to.

A fantastic professional with extensive experience. I have been working with him for three years and the results have been clearly positive. He is creative and proactive. He focuses on improving the student’s skills by designing learning strategies at the start of the course, in line with the objectives agreed between us. He teaches at various levels, including strictly formal business English.
In short, I would highly recommend him.

Find out more about Christopher

Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I was born in England and I teach English every day. But more than this, I love my language and was fortunate to have an English teacher who inspired me to write. I'm now a novelist.
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
I think Winston Churchill for his tenacity; William Wilberforce for bringing an end to slavery (which reflects our positive attitude towards our multicultural society); and Basil Fawlty, who typifies the eccentric British character!
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
My favourite words include: sleazy, inexorable and disparity. Least favourite are those Americanised words which are unnecessary (but which I find myself using, nonetheless.)
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
It's the language of business, media, medicine and transport. It has over a million words and can express almost anything.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Phrasal verbs. There are so many of them! Rules that get broken time and time again. The native language of the learner presents its own difficulties. The answer is patience and application on the part of both teacher and learner. And making sure lessons are enjoyable, even when tackling the hard stuff.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
I was expelled from school at the age of 12, missed four years of education and ended up with an M.A., becoming a teacher. Never write off the seemingly impossible-or improbable.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Living abroad has helped me to realise that the language I took for granted as being easy isn't easy to people from other countries. I believe this has helped me to be a sympathetic teacher and one who adapts his vocabulary and syntax when teaching intermediate-level students.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
Passion. Plus a teaching degree and twenty years of experience 😉
