About Mella
I have been teaching English (literature, writing, reading, test prep) since 1991. I have a proven track record helping students pass standardized tests, get accepted to college, and get As on their papers. I have been a teacher of the year, a reading coach of the year, and a Hope Street Group national teacher fellow. I have also worked as a technical writer and have had several Op-Ed articles published in newspapers such as the Orlando Sentinel and the Chicago Tribune.

My teaching philosophy is that every student is different; therefore, my teaching methodology varies for each student. I take a multiple intelligences approach to teaching, building in a variety of ways of learning into my lessons. Also, my undergraduate degree is from a university known as an engineering school. I have a very logical/mathematical approach to grammar and writing. I have had students who are more "math-minded" tell me that they truly understand grammar for the first time when I teach it using my "step" processes.

I know Mella from my time as a student in high school, but after graduation, I was fortunate to be able to reconnect with her and learn from her when I became a student teacher in her classroom. It was there that I witnessed her genuine passion for education. Mella is a unique person that always seems to be striving for new ways to explore teaching practices and advocate for her students. I consider my experience of knowing Mella and being able to learn from her to be pivotal to my academic and professional success. Mella is one of the most caring, genuine people I know, and is passionate about her work with students. I am fortunate to know her and to have learned from her.
I had Mella Baxter for two different courses in high school. She is one of those teachers that knows how to connect with her students in a meaningful way that makes learning seem fun and easy, even with difficult material. From personal experience, I have known her always be willing to help a current or previous student in their academics, career and personal growth.
Mella is one of my former teachers and she was honestly one of the best English teachers I ever had. She is super engaging with her students and makes sure that they understand the tasks she assigned. She always had a smile on her face and gave us a daily brain teaser every morning that we would have to figure out. She is honestly one of the best educators imaginable!
I know Mella from when I was in high school. She was my intensive reading teacher and she was one of the best teachers I had. She helped me get through the class. When I had trouble with the work, she was there to help me. Always gave us amazing books to read for a class assignment. I recommend Mella because she is an amazing person and I am honored and glad to have her as a friend now.
Mella was my High School English teacher Freshman and Senior year. She brings her real-world experience to the classroom in the best of ways. Prior to teaching, I believe she was a paralegal as well as a copy editor, so her grasp of English grammar is amazing. Her editing style is awesome (she never used red pen, so we would not feel discouraged). She walked us through the process of writing term papers, including an early deadline option. She would “grade” the entire paper and hand it back to us to revise following her comments. We could then turn it in on the actual deadline for the real grade. Hers is the only class where I have readily understood Shakespeare. She brought medieval literature to life by demonstrating jousting techniques (yep, she does that), as well as wearing period costumes! Mella believes that life is about more than the classroom, and she ensured that we learned life lessons as well as schoolwork ones. We learned to interact with texts thoroughly and critically examine their meanings, implication, and hidden lessons. One of her favorite lines from “The Dead Poet’s Society” was always on her wall: “Carpe diem!” Mella believes that her job is to sieze the day and each moment she has with students. She goes above and beyond for each of them, including fighting to make sure each and every student has their best chance. This extends to every area of their lives, not simply her classroom. From SAT preparations, support and encouragement, to filling out sincere glowing recommendations for anyone who asks, to lending a listening ear, Mella is the model teacher. I’m a teacher today, because of her example. As Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players...” Mella constantly encouraged us to determine what our part would be. Hers is to inspire, encourage, defend, instruct, and love fiercely. Being taught by her is an honor. Congratulations to her future students. She’ll change your life. And teach you English (among everything else) along the way.
