About Gayle
Gayle Nicholls-Ali is an award-winning fine arts photographer, creative writer, and dedicated art educator. With a passion for nurturing young talent, she has been inspiring students at La Cañada High School since 2007, where she teaches photography, digital art, AP Art & Design including independent study in a variety of art mediums. Gayle also served for 12 years as an adjunct professor at Pacific Oaks College School of Human Development and Education, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to her teaching practice.
Her outstanding contributions to education have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious La Cañada USD Teacher of the Year, LA County Office of Education Technology Integration Award, 11th Annual Crystal Apple Award Honoree, and multiple LA County Office of Education Digital Voice Awards. Gayle’s commitment to excellence in arts education has also earned her the Scholastic Art & Writing Distinguished Teacher Award.
In addition to her teaching roles, Gayle has significantly contributed to the arts education community as the Career Tech Ed Arts Media Entertainment Ambassador and co-facilitator of the CA-AME-EO Graphic Design/Visual/Commercial Arts Community of Practice. She is also a Creative Careers Leadership Lab board member, reflecting her dedication to preparing students for successful careers in the arts.
Recognized as a leader in incorporating social-emotional learning, equity, diversity, and inclusion into arts education, Gayle was selected as a Professional Learning Community teacher leader for the National Art Education Association, in the Connected Arts Network. Her leadership in this professional learning community underscores her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

As an experienced AP Art & Design instructor, I employ a student-centered teaching approach that focuses on nurturing creativity, technical skills, and critical thinking. My techniques include individualized feedback, hands-on projects, and portfolio reviews. I emphasize concept development, artistic processes, and effective presentation skills to ensure students can convey their unique artistic voices.
A typical lesson begins with a brief discussion of the day's objectives and a review of relevant art principles. This is followed by a hands-on project tailored to the student's interests and portfolio goals. Students engage in personal projects, with continuous guidance and feedback. We conclude with a critique session, where students reflect on their work and receive constructive feedback.
What sets me apart is my ability to connect with students and inspire them to push their artistic boundaries. My extensive experience in AP Art & Design equips me with a deep understanding of the curriculum and portfolio requirements. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive and motivating environment, where students feel confident to explore and express their creativity.
