About Niamh
Hi, I'm Niamh! I attended a grammar school myself, so I understand first-hand exactly what the Eleven Plus demands. The exams require robust subject knowledge and the ability to answer accurately and quickly under time pressure. With five years of tutoring experience, I've developed a coaching approach specifically built to maximise results.
The Eleven Plus technique I have developed trains the specific skills the exam tests: verbal and non-verbal reasoning, quick comprehension, and efficient answers. These skills are often not explicitly taught at school in the way the exam requires. My approach is built on consistent, structured practice that hones these skills over time, so that by exam day, speed and accuracy feel second nature rather than something a child is trying to figure out under pressure.
My lessons focus on identifying the question types a student finds slower or trickier, then drilling the techniques to approach them more efficiently, while gradually building the stamina to stay accurate across a full timed paper. I tailor sessions to the specific exam a school sets, with the clear goal of helping your child achieve the score they need to secure their place.

Teaching Philosophy & Typical Lesson Structure
My teaching philosophy is built around consistent, structured coaching rather than one-off tutoring sessions. Success in the Eleven Plus comes from steady, sustained practice, so I focus on embedding good habits both within lessons and at home, so that progress builds week on week.
In a typical 1-hour lesson, I begin with a short vocabulary test based on the previous week's list, reinforcing the vocabulary base that both English and Verbal Reasoning rely on. I then spend around 20–25 minutes focusing on a key area within Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, or Non-Verbal Reasoning, addressing a specific technique or question type a student is finding slower or trickier. The remainder of the lesson is spent on targeted practice questions applying what's just been covered, building both accuracy and speed under timed conditions.
Home learning is a crucial part of Eleven Plus success, and I see it as a direct continuation of the lesson rather than a separate task. I set home learning weekly and mark it during the following lesson while the student works through further exam-style questions, so that each session builds directly on what's been practised at home rather than starting from scratch.
I also work closely with parents to build home learning into a child's daily routine, since little and often makes a real difference. This might mean early morning study sessions, using flashcards or verbal reasoning practice during the school run, or setting aside a dedicated hour each day after school. I send parents a suggested timetable to help structure this, so that home learning complements our lessons. The students who have gone on to successfully secure grammar school places are consistently those who embedded these habits into their daily routine, which is why I place such an emphasis on them from the very start.

Niamh guided me through both my GCSE and A Level English Literature studies, helping me to achieve top marks in both. She is attentive, very patient, and was able to quickly decipher where I needed the most support. I’d highly recommend her as a tutor.
