About Joshua
I have been teaching for 20+ years in various countries and states, and was awarded "teacher of the year" in Vermont a few years ago. While I'm a specialist in differentiated instruction and other "modern" pedagogical techniques, I adhere to many of the classical approaches and values associated with learning to read, write, and speak. I chose to study English when a professor gave me a handout (in a college English class) that I couldn't comprehend. I was frustrated, but upon learning his unusual technique (which included a revision of the way I'd learned to read), I moved into the English Department.

Lessons are tailored to each student's unique needs. I am a believer in being a "guide on the side" rather than a "sage on the stage," and this emphasis on the Socratic method and student-centered learning has made it possible to reach a diverse group of students. I am a writer at heart (currently working on a science fiction novel)... everyone's story is different and each unique perspective is valuable. My goal with all students is fundamentally the same: I help people understand their strengths and build upon them to achieve success (and "success" is different for everyone). I have taught Pre-K to College English and I'm here to help.
