About Harriet

A University of Cambridge Veterinary Medicine Graduate, with six years' experience teaching A level Biology and two years' experience as an AQA examiner.

Qualifying as a veterinary surgeon, my desire to educate and help young people achieve their full potential drove me to pursue a career in teaching. I have since completed a PGCE at the University of Chester and worked as a Teacher of Biology in two contrasting sixth form colleges.

I am currently on maternity leave from teaching in an "Outstanding Sixth Form College" where I teach both Year 12 and Year 13 A level Biology. In my most recent post I have refined my teaching and resources to be highly exam specific. This has been achieved by scrutinising previous A level papers, mark schemes and examiners' reports and updating my resources accordingly. I share with my students the common errors that are made on the exam so that they are aware not to make them in the exam. I also teach my students how to use this past exam material to effectively improve their exam technique.

My lessons are highly exam specific. I regularly scrutinise previous A level papers, mark schemes and examiners' reports in order to give my students the most up to date exam tips. I share with my students the common errors that are made on the exam so that they are aware not to make them. I also teach my students how to use this past exam material to effectively improve their exam technique.

An empathetic and kind teacher, I believe that students thrive in an environment where they feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions. I create this environment within my lessons by adopting a positive and motivating approach to learners, encouraging them to ask questions and welcoming mistakes as opportunities to improve. I also encourage my students to regularly reflect on their progress in order to take ownership of their learning and for them to better understand how they can bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From a young age I have been fascinated by Biology, which initially led me to complete a degree in veterinary medicine. I then decided to retrain as a Biology teacher as I realised I was more motivated to educate young people.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I particularly enjoy topics relating to physiology, especially homeostasis. I think it's amazing how our bodies are able to create such a finely tuned internal environment.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

At university I was inspired to get into teaching by my neuroscience tutor. His passion for the subject was infectious and despite being an expert in his field he was always very patient with his students.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Expertise - I believe tutors should be experts in their subject in terms of what is required for the exam, to pass this information on to their students so that they can achieve the best grade possible.

Clarity in communication - Biology is such a content heavy A level. I think it's crucial that tutors amplify the signal so that students understand exactly what they need to know for their exam and which key words to include.

Patience and Kindness - By demonstrating these qualities, I believe students feel comfortable to make mistakes and ask questions, which are vital to improve.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In addition to Biology, Chemistry and Physics, I took French as an A level. Every French lesson began with practising French conversation. During this starter activity, the whole class would stand up and we would throw a teddy between us as a way of signalling whose turn it was to speak. As a shy student at college, I remember finding this quite nerve wracking to begin with. But my French teacher was so encouraging and supportive that I quickly learnt to really value this practise and even enjoy it. As a teacher now myself, I try to stretch my students in a supportive way just like my French teacher did.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Being the study of living things, Biology is an incredibly vast subject! When you think deeply about any Biology topic, it often leads to further questions and it's easy to fall down a rabbit hole. I have always enjoyed carrying out research to further my knowledge and really applaud curiosity. But I think you must be careful to not let the pursuit of extra information distract you from learning the content that's essential for the exam.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In addition to teaching, I am passionate about food and how nutrition impacts health. In my spare time, I enjoy creating new recipes; my one-year-old daughter is my greatest critic!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I place great emphasis on helping to build a student's confidence. I do this by reassuring students that there is no such thing as a stupid question and that mistakes should be seen as useful learning opportunities. I think it's also important to celebrate a student's progress.

My lessons are highly exam specific. The mark schemes in Biology require very specific terminology and I ensure that this is clear in my lessons. I also scrutinise the newest exam questions and mark schemes available and update my lessons accordingly.
