About MING

Hi,

I’m a Chinese guy living in Hobart striving to become a language teacher. I was born in Beijing and had lived there for 30 years before coming to Tasmania. I studied at UTAS and graduated from business last year.

My tutoring experience started when I volunteered at TasTafe as an English conversation tutor in 2015, and later on in 2017, I enrolled into a training course at TasTAFE (Campbell) provided to prospective volunteers tutoring English. During this time, instead of becoming an English tutor, I discovered that I would be more needed as a Mandarin tutor, considering I'm a native Mandarin speaker and the increasing popularity of Mandarin as a foreign language.

I started tutoring Mandarin in Hobart since November 2017. So far, among my students were businessman, legal professional and government employee. In short, I have been helping students of various proficiency levels with tailored tutoring services to best suit each individual student’s needs and requirements.

My specialty is accent reduction because I'm originally from Beijing. According to Wikipedia, the Beijing dialect, also known as Pekingese, is the prestige dialect of Mandarin spoken in the urban area of Beijing, and it is the phonological basis of Standard Chinese. I want to make it clear that all dialects and accents are equally correct, and there is no “better accent”. Nonetheless, I agree that Pekingese would be pretty beneficial for foreign learners since it’s the easiest understood accent throughout China due to the fact that most nationwide televisions and radio programs are in Standard Chinese. Moreover, many Chinese in other parts of the country think it’s adorable.

I have been told that I'm professional and patient at teaching, and I really enjoy helping people improve their language skills. I look forward to serving you the best way I can. Xiexie.

I have tutored students of different proficiency levels, learning habits and goals. Based on my experience, the most effective approach is, during the initial sessions, I work with the student to find out what skills / aspects the student wants to improve on most and how he / she learns best, and then together we develop a personalised learning system through discussion, observation and feedback.

For example, for a beginner student who wants to study Chinese systematically, a good method would be, with the aid of one of the published textbooks and associated audios, I help the student start from the basics, step by step.

For a legal professional who wants to improve her already sound Mandarin proficiency in order to serve her Chinese speaking clients better, we would just focus on dialogue practices that simulate her daily communications with clients.

For a learner who wishes to polish up his/her accent, I would pay close attention to correct phonetic issues during all conversation practices.
