About Dominique

I am a lover of oral and visual story-telling. I try to make lessons as relatable as possible, but I also hope to inspire students and shine a light on their strengths. I expect respect and in exchange, I offer fairness, understanding, and flexibility to my students.

I am from Toronto, have lived in the Middle East, and have traveled across the North and South Americas, a few countries in Africa, all across Europe, and some of Asia and Oceania. I am currently residing in Squamish, British Columbia but I tend to move around a lot.

All of my free time is spent hanging with my dog named Beau, rock climbing, snowboarding, camping, or traveling. I also have a unique passion for film photography and hope to have my very own darkroom one day.

About the lesson

It is best to meet the student where they are at. Accessing their prior knowledge, types of intelligences, likes, and dislikes will set up a good relationship.

From there, I have different approaches for different subjects. For both math and science, I usually have a structured approach to my unit and lesson planning (for example., 4 lessons in the science 8 chemistry unit).

My approach to social studies is less linear. However, I do like to blend units together in an order that allows students to identify and analyze connections. My goals in social studies are to show students how to approach a topic from different perspectives, how to use accurate evidence, understand causes and consequences, and how to identify patterns that have occurred across history.

Lessons usually begin with a learning target, teaching, and having students practice and apply new concepts.

My experience as a classroom teacher has taught me about diverse learning needs, how to communicate more effectively, and it has given me the opportunity to solidify my teaching approaches.

Ms. Dominique Claybo was my six grade teacher and still one hundred percent my favourite teacher. She is a fun, caring, loving, and creative teacher who really cares about what she is teaching. Ms. Dominique Claybo and I lived through covid together and still through all of the masks and social distancing she found a way to make school fun. I have always loved creative writing but never had anyone to show my stories. I remember one day I gave Ms. Dominique Claybo one of my stories to read. Every other teacher would just briefly skim it and give it back, but Ms. Dominique Claybo took time to look over it, edit it and tell me how I can improve it. I later entered my story into a creative writing contest and won. I would absolutely recommend Ms. Dominique Claybo because she is a creative, extremely helpful, and fun teacher, who really cares.
