About Macie

I am a current student in the Royal College of Music, studying on the Bachelor of Music programme.
As a child I was a student at Chetham’s School of Music, where I gained a lot of early experience in orchestras, chamber ensembles and as a soloist. Also during my time at Chethams I was a junior practice co-ordinator, helping younger students during their practice blocks- which would have been my first experiences with teaching.
I have experience teaching younger children with very basic/no prior knowledge of the instrument.
I have participated on lots of courses nationally and internationally, pursuing a career in professional music.
I began learning the violin at a very young age and remember the importance of being engaged and interested in lessons, which I have taken into my own teaching.

Having dedicated most of my life to learning and playing the violin I find teaching students of my own exciting and interesting always!
A typical lesson for a complete beginner would include learning about the violin and it’s different parts, how to hold the violin, basic techniques and beginning a journey with music theory, such as learning to read music and recognise basic rhythmic patterns. Lessons would be catered to each student individually (meaning if a student had prior experience with the instrument we would begin at a more suitable pace).
When teaching younger children I believe a shorter lesson of 30-45 minutes is more effective and allows for maximum concentration throughout. Older students would have more flexibility in choosing timings with help from me to get the appropriate balance.
I always create a practice/homework diary especially for younger students which helps keep track of their development.
When teaching children I enjoy building a good working relationship with parents/guardians and believe it is important for the student that we communicate effectively. I am always very happy to have parents/guardians sitting in lessons and ask that they help me in encouraging their child through their musical journey.
If a student was keen to participate in the grade system eg ABRSM exams, I would be happy to do this, as long as the timing were appropriate. It is also equally as important to play music that keeps students engaged and interested so I am happy to play any style of music as long as it is matched to a students ability and allows them to keep developing!

I am happy to teach children and adults alike at a beginner/novice level and believe I bring a young and fresh perspective to teaching this wonderful instrument!
