About Katherine
EXPERIENCE:
I am a reading and writing specialist and Executive Function Coach with 7+ years of experience. I love empowering children, young adults, their parents, and adults through their struggles.
I am currently a 9th-10th special education IEP teacher at an NYC high school. I work with students who struggle with reading and writing.
Before teaching older students, I taught K-5 students at an NYC private school specializing in serving students with dyslexia, speech & language disorders and ADHD.
During my years teaching, I created the curriculum for a 9th-grade English class which focused on executive functioning skills, in addition to evidence-based reading/writing interventions.
I also develop and create IEPs aligned with student needs.
I hold two Masters's Degrees (Special Education & General Education) from Bank Street College ID Education (NYC) and my bachelor's degree from Tulane University. I have also been certified in Orton-Gillingham phonics-based reading intervention.
INTERVENTION RELEVANCE IN 2023:
After COVID, many students are behind in academics. I have the experience to deliver results and empower learners.
Many students need help with their life skills as well: organizing materials, using time effectively, and seeing the big picture in life.
IEP COACHING:
I can also work with parents to help them understand their child's IEPs and empower them in the special education referral process.

MY APPROACH:
My lessons are student-centered, interest-based, and hands-on. I believe every child can do well with the right support. I will work with your child to gain the skills they need to become more independent in academics and life skills.
SERVICES:
After you describe your challenges and situations, I can tailor my lessons to help with:
• ELA test prep
• Summer school tutoring (or extra tutoring to prevent summer-learning loss)
• phonics and comprehension reading strategies
• explicit writing instruction (essay outlining, planning, proofreading)
• IEP advocacy (explaining your child's IEP document to you)
I believe in educating the whole child and teaching them to advocate for themselves.
