About Mike
Fire In The Head Productions, the little indie company of Mike Yow, teaches cutting-edge techniques for actors and other upcoming performing arts, from monologue technique to improv to cold-readings (and most importantly, how to get cast). Mike's company also produces and publishes materials for tabletop roleplaying games - such as D&D and Savage Kingdoms - which help teach good improv techniques, problem solving, and collaborative storytelling. Despite what many of my colleagues and peers believe, I did not attend theatre or film school. Instead, however, I have 15 years of professional theatre, film, and other performing arts experience (murder mystery events, haunted attraction acting, birthday parties, corporate training events, event hosting, and more). The experience, hands-on training, and teaching that I have done over these years - and at least two decades before - amount to far more than a degree or scholarship, having been on regional stages, traveling shows, and big budget film sets plying my craft. I try to instill this in my students too that, even though film or theatre school can be excellent exposure, one can break into theatre and film with mere dedication, determination, and some talent that has been trained and cultivated.

After establishing a friendly and trusting relationship (this is a hugh priority with me), I generally proceed with comfort-building exercises that emphasis fun, trust, and getting the creative juices flowing. After this step, then more serious mentorship occurs, from coaching the student to play more to his or hew natural strengths and bringing up any less strong traits. I also leave a fair amount of room for direction-changing in a given lesson, relying upon the current mood of the student, any requests for certain aspects that need more work (or have more interest), and the like.
