About Laura Lee
I'm a Los Angeles native who found myself back in this wonderful city after living in New York for school. Since I graduated from Hofstra University's BFA program only 4 years ago, I have a fresh take on the current Los Angeles acting industry. I'm intuitive, so I love getting to the bottom of what's going to work for YOU and get you work, not how someone else may do it. With my extensive training and background (in music as well as acting) I have no doubts that together we can give you confidence in your work and in your own voice!
I've worked mostly with high school students and college students, but am looking to branch out to help working adults. I've worked at Hamilton High School (the Music Academy) as a musical director, a dialect coach, and as an acting coach. I've also worked at LAHSA (Los Angeles High School of the Arts) as an acting coach. While in New York, I was hired by Hofstra University to work as a dialect coach and director's assistant. I regularly meet with several actors to work on self-tape auditions, coaching them along the way. In addition to meeting with a group once a week to practice this, I meet with several other actors throughout the week as their auditions come up.
While in high school and college, I was taught numerous methods, such as Meisner, Alexander, and View Points, some of which really work for me and I still use today. For the sake of an audition, since you may not receive all of the information, we do what we can with the given material and try to fill in as many blanks as possible to complete the world of that scene. Since every audition and scene is different, I most often don't approach the material with a "known method" but rather work with you to see what you bring to the table and shape it from there.
As an actor myself, I've studied with Lesly Kahn, Wendy Davis, Diane Venora, Lilach Mendelovich, Mary Lou Belli, Charlie Dougherty and Dan Wiley, to name a few. I've also taken classes at Groundlings and the Second City, and regularly perform live sketch comedy at the Comedy Central Stage. I think it's immensely important to keep up your craft, so I'm always in class!
My favorite thing about coaching is that moment when your student "gets it," much more commonly known as the "A ha moment." This brings me such joy because I know they can take that discovery (and confidence in themselves and their choices) into the work and into the room!
