About Tim

Hello, my name is Tim Schaab and I am a freshman at UW-Madison studying Kinesiology. Over the years I have come to discover many useful study skills and tricks to help me succeed in difficult classes like AP Psychology, Chemistry, Physics, and Precalculus. l I take an approach of active learning and recall to ensure students learn information faster and retain it longer. In addition, I try to break down complex concepts into simple ideas in order to help students understand the big picture and why what they are learning is important.

I enjoy tutoring because I know there is no greater feeling for a student than when something finally clicks. I also enjoy being able to help other people. School is difficult and it can be frustrating when you don't understand something. Therefore, being able to help eliminate that frustration is what I'm here to do!

I've always been a student who has thought the way many teachers teach is ineffective. Over the years I've discovered  effective ways for learning information that I feel are more useful and I wanted to share those with students.

Being a freshman in college, I have experience with all the high school classes and I've taken most of them within the last three years so the information is still fresh for me. I have also succeded in difficult college courses such as Biology and College Algebra by using the techniques I plan to use with students.

I begin by teaching every concept in it's simplist form. This way the idea doesn't feel so overwhelming. Then I start to explain the more complex parts of the topic so students can see how everything relates back to the simple idea. Next, I figure out areas of weakness by using a technique called active recall which is where the student tries explaining the concept to me. By doing this, I'm able to identify what the student understands and where they may be struggling.

I work with all 9th through 12th grade students.

I would suggest choosing a teacher who will go the extra mile when it comes to teaching material. It's not just about learning, it's about knowing why what you're learning is important and why you should care about it.

An example of this is physics and football. Many students enjoy watching football, but not many students enjoy physics. However, if a student learns the physics behind throwing a football for a touhdown, they usually have a greater appreciation for the subject because they understand why knowing that information is useful.

One of my hobbies is photography and I recently had two of my photos featured on the bestofthebadgerstate instagram account which is a collection of the best photos from around the state of Wisconsin.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What is the bigger idea my teacher is trying to get at?

Asking this allows students to understand the bigger picture.

2. How does what I'm learning connect back to what we learned in previous lessons?

Drawing on previous knowledge can help the material a student is struggling with make more sense.

3. What do I understand?

Figuring out what a student already knows allows them to narrow down troublesome areas. This makes asking for help much easier.
