About Adrian

Hello prospective students, my name is Adrian and I am a 26 year old professional musician and music teacher from New York. All skill levels and ages are encouraged to contact me and my teaching style is centered around playing music first while still providing a strong background in the fundamentals (i.e Theory, Instrumental Technique). I have taught for five years now both privately and at Serrano's Academy in Belleville NJ.I live in Harlem and have a car so I am willing to travel or have lessons at my apartment on 137th street (right off of the City College 1 train stop). My training includes degrees from William Paterson University as well as a Masters from Manhattan School of Music, both in Jazz Performance. I hope to meet you soon!

(concealed information)

I love the oppurtunity to see my students progress. Music is a vast world that has many facets to it but I believe that hard work and dedication to our craft is the backbone of what we do. Being able to share this philosophy with my students makes the hard work that I put in worthwhile. Together we can make the world a better place by sharing our gift.

My father is a professional bass player before me and was my first teacher.  He currently teaches at Montclair State University as the adjuct Jazz Bass Professor.  He inspired me to start teaching at the early age of 21 when I first joined the staff at Serrano's Academy in Belleville, NJ.  Since then I have taught privately and enjoy the time that I get to spend with each student. We try to work on their weaknesses while encouraging them to pursue their strong points.

I recieved my Undergraduate degree from William Paterson University and my Masters from Manhattan School of Music, both in Jazz Performance.  Teaching has always been a passion of mine and I have taught private students for the last five years. I have also taught in a music school called Serrano's Academy in Belleville NJ for one year before moving to New York. Although I primarily play for a living, I know that teaching is such a commodity to the advancement of music in the future.

First, I would like to hear each student play their instrument and assess where they are musically.  From that point I like to find the perfect balance of hands-on musical activities such as learning the bassline to a new song, with fundamental building blocks to strengthen the musician, such as scales and arpeggios and the theory behind the notes we play. One important factor is to focus on what style and genre of music the student is most interested in.  One big question I ask every student is "Do you listen to music and if so what do you listen to?" There is no wrong asnwer and there can be something to learn from every form of music in the world!

I have worked with all ages of students at Serrano's Academy.  The ages ranged from 8 years old to my bass student in his mid-fifties.  The level has been from beginner to intermediate and I am comfortable teaching someone who has never touched a bass before.  It is fun to start from the beginning!

Look for a teacher who is open to your own level and interests in music.  Look for someone who has a wealth of information and is willing to find the best way to share it with you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What helps me the most as a teacher is when a student has an interest in listening to music.  This provides a background for which style and genre we can focus on the most.  The great thing about bass is that there is a bass part in every song in the world!
