About Brynne
I may not have a teaching degree or as much experience in a classroom as other applicants, but I am passionate about helping others succeed. I am reliable, warm, empathetic, genuine, and kind. I left my big law firm job because I wanted to do more things that I love and help people on a daily basis in a real, tangible way--not just by donating money or occasionally squeezing in some pro bono work between all the billable work. I didn't want to sit behind a desk my whole life, doing very little that really felt valuable or important simply because I felt that I needed the money. After I left the firm, I immediately volunteered to coach a kid's soccer team in Ohio City and began working at a cat cafe that helps adoptable rescue cats find homes. The kids were amazing (and so were the cats!) and the experiences have both been incredibly valuable and exactly what I was looking for when I left my firm. In other words, I'm not in this for the money; I'm here because I care. I would be thrilled to get to know you and your child and to do whatever I can to help your child succeed.
I love the creativity of teaching. I love coming up with fun problems and creative solutions tailored to the individual(s) I'm working with. Each student is unique and learns in a different way. And I love the challenge of figuring out what works best for each person and then the rewarding pride when they finally get it. I also love getting to know them personally and being a part of the learning/growing process for them.
I love how teaching encourages me to learn the material better. You can't really teach it if you don't understand it. Teaching gives me that opportunity to really reinforce what I have learned in the past.
I love helping and giving back. Coaching and teaching make me feel more connected to the younger version of myself that played sports and took classes and I love having the opportunity to help create those experiences for new generations of athletes and students.
I also love science. I love how ordered it is. I took mineralogy as part of my geology degree and it was basically an inorganic chemistry class. I memorized the chemical formulas for over a hundred different minerals using index cards and mnemonic devices. And I loved doing it. I still remember many of them. Although I was a geology major, I also took Chem I & II and Organic Chem I & II in college. I loved Chem so much that I took Organic Chem I & II as electives.
I was a laboratory teaching assistant for two years in college (intro to geology lab and environmental geology lab) and I was a teaching assistant for two years in law school. As a laboratory teaching assistant, I led a lecture at the beginning of each lab and then walked around the room answering questions and assisting the students with the lab assignments. I also would meet some of the students by request for individual help. I remember a girl whose first language was not English needing a lot of extra help. I loved working with her and getting to know her. I still remember teaching her how to draw contour lines on a map and how excited she was when she finally got it right.
As a teaching assistant in law school, I would run large review sessions for the first-year students each week. I would put together power point presentations, come up with hypothetical problems with fun themes from popular movies and TV shows, hold office hours, and meet students on an individual basis for extra help. I have always loved teaching other students, coming up with fun problems for them, and answering their questions. I like figuring out a complicated subject and breaking it down into simple terms.
I have also worked and volunteered as a soccer coach for young children (ages 2-12).
