My typical process for working with a new student is first getting to know the student a little bit and where they stand with the subject material they are currently studying. Then I will work with the student to help them understand what they are having trouble with. Most of the time, students need to take a step back and look at the basics and how the basics apply to the problem at hand.
I have worked with college students (most of whom were my peers).
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before coming to a teacher, students should try to think of the topics that they struggle most with and start with those. In some cases, getting an understanding of the harder topics gives students the ability to understand the simpler topics.
