About Miriam
I have many years of experience teaching drawing, painting, and design on the college level and have worked as a professional artist for over 30 years. I hold an MFA in painting from Indiana University and have exhibited throughtout the country. I taught full time at Miami of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio and have taught at Agnes Scott College, Spelman College, and workshops in many different cities. My work has been featured in 3 books and I'm the recipient of 2 regional National Endowment for the Arts awards in painting as well as numerous grants and awards. I have experience in many different media--drawing, watercolor, oil painting, encaustic, mosaics, textile art, calligraphy, and sculpture with found objects.
I love working in different media. My art is idea driven so I choose the right medium for the concept. It's great to always be learning new techniques and expanding what I can do. It's been a great life working for myself and having wonderful clients.
I taught full time after receiving my masters and part-time for years afterwards

First, I assess the student's past experience, then find out what their goals are. I like to introduce students to ways they might not be familliar or necessarily comfortable with at first in order to get them to see in different ways. I have exercises that isolate certain skills, but always with an aim of bringing it all together for the total picture. I don't teach rote methods--my teaching is about ways of seeing and expressing.
University, elders, children
Try to be clear about what you hope to gain from the lessons. For example, if you want to learn how to draw with a high degree of realism make sure that's something the teacher is open to. Or if you're interested in abstract art make sure the teacher will give you the foundation for evaluating what makes a successful non-representational picture.
I had a commission to do a 10' x 12' mosaic in a building. I had never done such a large mosaic and was so pleased with how it turned out. I recently completed a commission for a donor wall that was fabricated from my design. That was a new direction for me and I'm thrilled with the results.
