About Shaun
The most exciting part for me is to get engaged with creating and unlocking that sense of "play" many of us find missing in our every day to day tasks and scheduling. The sense of relief and joy I see when people are finally able to unwind when approaching art is enough for me to want to keep doing this. Art saves lives.
The patience and my way of explaining things really help connect people to feeling less frustrated with their own art making and I try to show people that we don't have to approach art with perfectionism like many of us may tend to do with other aspects of life or work.
When people are able to break away from that sense of expectation and need to be perfect through art, it has a way of changing the way a person approaches many aspects of their own life with less rigidity.
I went to college for education and art, but did not graduate due to life and financial reasons.
Since then, I have been in various teaching roles with my IT career, with life advice and as a father. I simply love teaching people what I know.
Teaching art is an entirely new endeavor for me, so I'd like to be up front about that and not mislead anyone.
Typically I teach a bit of Philosophy, , Domestic Abuse and Trauma/Addiction recovery in an informal setting.
Personally, I am a huge advocate for mental health and especially art or music as a therapy. I only recently started incorporating my Art into some of those live sessions.
Art for me is a way of life that I didnt and don't always have the privilege to enjoy. And seeing how it's benefited helping PTSD adults.(Full disclosure - I am officially diagnosed with CPTSD, I understand if this may draw concern in determining services, but it is my best interest to inform you for adequate decision making. Feel free to ask further questions about this, if you'd like.) Working with adults with different mental health afflictions provided me a unique setting and teach to different learning styles.
I am a self taught artist who has been doing different kinds of art for 20 years more so as a hobbyist while having a primary career in IT.
I did attend Art University, but did not graduate.

The first initial meeting - I try to understand the student (or the student's parent/guardian) goals that are required - whether they are steered towards academia or personal creative goals. I encourage asking as many specific questions as you may feel you need to garner as much information to ensure I would be a great fit as an instructor.
After determining and negotiating whether my services would be sufficient and beneficial for the student/parent/guardian, I would start of with speaking with the student.
I would have a brief conversation with them in terms of their goals, maybe other interests they can draw from to reflect on how art impacts those interests, or can be influenced by them.
I would have them show me any art they are comfortable showing me. This aids me to see their current level of artistic ability, and gives me a sense of what inspires them or what style they may have. It also helps me to assist with developing "style," as I can also introduce them to severa similar artist works and techniques to help garner ideas and incorporate those techniques into their personal creativity and ingenuity.
I am very easy going and patient. I prefer to employ the use of "SMART Goals" methodology to assist in keeping track of progress, but mostly allow freedom of EXPRESSION. My personal belief is when approaching art, just like anything else, "overthinking it" or trying to be perfect with b the rules can hinder our creativity and imagination. So, if you ask my personal preference, I have a more intuitive approach to art over adhering to a "regiment." However, I do understand the purpose and benefit to planning and staying on task, especially for Academia or one's own more "stricter" discipline of self improvement.
There is the technical side of art (rules and guidelines) and then there is the artistic side of art (having a foundational understanding of "the rules" and using your own curiosity and imagination to "break them.")
For academia, I try to adhere to the existing curriculum. For personal goals, I simply facilitate your own goals and I can be as flexible or as rigid as you need to be that "accountability partner," so to speak.
Think of it like you are going to gym and lifting large weights. You might need a spotting partner to help support you when "failures" happen. I am simply there to facilitate your space and we can move as fast or as slow as we need to in order to make sure you feel comfortable before proceeding onto other aspects or tasks.
I have two children myself (tween/teen boys) and have showed them how to do some fundamentals with drawing, sketching and painting.
I have worked with kids that are considered "defiant" and need a little extra "TLC" to guide them. It isn't often that I have children be rude to me or be so turned off on art. Many of them are excited to just make something with their own two hands and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing and having mastered something. It fills them with a sense of competence and confidence that I find so important to master, not just with art, but with many aspects of life.
Be sure that you are absolutely comfortable and safe with your instructor, as well as satisfied with the quality of the instructors presentation.
Think of it like this - you are your own boss and you are hiring someone to provide a service for you.
Would you want to continue doing business with someone who is not meeting your requirements for the job or makes you (or your child) feel unsafe or "stupid" for trying to learn or make mistakes? Does the instructor "shame" or overreact?
You have every right, as your own boss, to stop doing business with your instructor, especially if they make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
As your own "boss," you have every right to terminate services with THEM. Most importantly, you are not obligated to inform them the reason why. You do not "owe" them a reason in that instance, but you may feel at liberty to share so that the instructor perhaps can learn from their mistakes as well. Use your best judgement, accordingly.
Please keep this in mind to avoid unsafe situations. Safety is priority. As a father myself, I say this especially to parents of child students.
I host Live TikToks and I was doing a live art stream creating Alcohol Ink art.
Two people from Wyoming joined and we had a blast chatting and them watching their art be created in real time. They bought them for $20 each to support a small local artist and shared my page with others to follow and support. It was beautiful!

What are my personal or academic goals?
How do I feel about doing this? Am I doing this because "I want to?" Or do I feel forced because it is expected of me?
If it is expected of me, can I still find a way to make the best of it while it is temporary?
Do I feel this teacher is respectful and providing me a safe space to facilitate my learning?
Do I feel my instructor challenges me enough to grow?
Do I feel my instructor allows me to ask questions?
Is the pricing fair and reasonable?
What are some of favorite or most inspiring artists? (If you are new to art or don't have a "favorite," that is okay!)
What medium do I wish to explore? Why?
What are the pros and cons to tutoring?(Versus public/private schooling, versus self or home study?)
What do I like about this instructor compared to other instructors? What don't I like?
Is my instructor adaptable and accommodating to my needs?
Do I feel confident or competent enough to handle this? If not, why?

$20 for 30 minutes
$35 for 1 hour
(Initial $5 non refundable deposit to lock spot and time, remainder due at end of session)
*If I am scheduled into a session and complete a session, and the session ends with a failure to pay remaining due per pricing schedule at end of session, this will result in immediate termination of services.
While I love to service others, I do not and will not appreciate or my time or energy being taken advantage of. It takes considerable planning and effort to teach (especially to youth,) and if you do not have the means to afford the service at that time, please reschedule when you do have the means.
Do NOT lock me into a schedule and fail to pay at the end of it.
If canceling, I ask that at a minimum to try to give me ample notice to work around both the student/parent's schedule.
I ask at a minimum that I am informed 2 hours prior to the appointment time, as this will give me time to refill the slot and plan for that changeover, if necessary.
I will not charge for canceling.
However, repeat untimely cancellations (3+) will result in termination of tutoring services.
