I always begin the process with a one-on-one talk with the student. It is important for me to assess their hesistancies with the course work if any, their joys with the course work if any, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
From there, I find it most efficient to give the student practical and concrete skills that will help them succeed consistantly in the future. These skills tend to deal with organization, planning, and thought process.
