About Sam
Sam P.K. Collins (also known as Ras Plo Kwia Glebluwuo) is a grassroots journalist and educator with multidisciplinary experience as a writer, editor, producer, researcher, and filmmaker. Brother Sam’s grassroots news brand AllEyesOnDC serves as part of his effort to shed light on issues that affect people of African descent in the D.C. metropolitan region through community news events, in-depth articles, think pieces, and on-the-ground advocacy.
Previously, Brother Sam has written reports of President Barack Obama’s activities as a White House press pool reporter for American Urban Radio Networks. He has also had stints at ThinkProgress, National Public Radio and NBC Universal. At the Washington Informer, where he currently serves as an education and politics reporter, Brother Sam launched WI Bridge, a publication geared toward Black millennials in the D.C. metropolitan area.
In classrooms within the local African-centered and homeschool community, Brother Sam’s instruction, including project-based learning opportunities, focuses on major aspects of communication: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Through exposure to historically and culturally significant texts, students under Brother Sam’s tutelage have increased their vocabulary, sharpened their writing, and learned to recognize elements of storytelling and rhetoric. Brother Sam’s instruction also enables students to practice self-determination and become competitive in today’s globalized society.
Brother Sam, a native Washingtonian of Liberian descent, holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication and a master’s degree in public policy, with a concentration in urban policy, from The George Washington University. There, he founded ACE Magazine, a multicultural campus publication.
Teaching was a natural progression from journalism. Now I'm at the point where I do both simultaneously.
I'm a journalist by trade with classroom experience and experience as a writer and editor. Over the last few years, I've also developed curricula that helps students gain a command of the writing process and conventions of grammar. Some writing workshops I've hosted have culiminated in the production of teen anthologies.

I collaborate with teachers and parents to get a sense of what's causing difficulty in the young person's studies. From that point, I ask him or her to talk about their experiences, and we go through a couple exercises to get a sense of where they need help. The initial exercise sets the stage for an action plan that dictates how future tutoring sessions will evolve.
I've worked with students of all grade levels and various levels of reading comprehension.
Students need someone who can explain the "why." Knowing the why in English & Language Arts increases mastery of the foundational concepts. It's not about memorization but gaining a grasp of those concepts that young people can manipulate, whether they're writing or reading.
Though he tried to act like he didn't, one of my young people, a seventh grader, grew in his ability to make inferences and explain how those inferences supported his answer to comprehension questions. This happened after I walked him and sistera along the comprehension + inference + analysis process I've devised for students learning how digest large, complicated texts.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about their reading stamina, their favorite texts to read, and their learning style.

Sam is professional, patient, and just plain awesome! I highly recommend him if you need tutoring in English. Honestly, it was because of Sam that I passed my English course.
Sam is a very enthusiastic instructor. He gives each student individualized attention. His teaching style is engaging, interactive and fun. He inspires reluctant writers to express themselves with great detail in the active voice.
Sam is a wonderful tutor. He is patient and kind. He understands how to break down concepts, so your child can understand them better. I would highly recommend Sam as a tutor.
Bro. Sam has been tutoring my 10 year old son in grammar and creative writing for over a year. The transformation in my son's attitude toward writing has been amazing to witness. Brother Sam has a way of making my son write paragraphs and short stories without him feeling like its school work. Bro. Sam encourages my son to write about topics that interest him which makes the exercise more fun. In addition to writing, Bro Sam also works with my son on english language art (ELA) and Grammar including identifying parts of a sentence and proofreading.
Brother Sam is very personable and relatable. He starts off his tutoring sessions by asking my son how he is doing and what mood he is in. This allows him to better engage with my son based on his mood that day. My son really connects with Bro. Sam and I think this is very important for a teacher/tutor.
Bro. Sam’s most endearing quality is his patience. My son has lots of energy, struggles to focus at times, and isn’t always immediately responsive when Bro. Sam asks him questions. Even so, Bro. Sam remains calm, unflustered and composed when waiting for him to reply or draft a sentence. I love that I can leave them alone on zoom and trust that my son will learn something that day.
My son no longer dreads writing assignments. He is a confident writer and has the tools to put together a pretty decent paragraph. Best of all, is his confidence and attitude toward writing has been significantly improved through his work with Bro. Sam. All of this is because Bro. Sam makes my son feel like he is capable.
Bro. Sam is thorough and transparent. He provides me weekly written recaps about each session. Recaps include what topics were covered during their sessions, take-home work ( I have requested take-home work for my son), and son's level of engagement was during class. At the end of every group of sessions he points out areas of growth from the previous sessions and areas of focus for future sessions. I highly recommend Bro Sam as a Grammar, ELA and writing tutor.
Very Happy my homeschooled child realized my standards are not uncommon once they met Baba Sam- a fellow alumnist.
Bro. Sam is a great tutor. He is an experienced teacher who brings a wealth of knowledge and engaging educational activities to engage his students . He is professional and relatable, and willing to listen and work with parents to customize the best academic program for students.
Bro. Sam has a great way of connecting with students, which helps to deliver the content with ease. His thoroughness and attention to detail held our student to a high standard. Definitely a gem of a teacher, and looking forward to more sessions with him.
Sam was very helpful, insightful, and knowledgeable when helping my boyfriend and I with various of our English assignments. He did so well that I passed my sophomore college English course with an A. If you need help with any type of assignment, I highly recommend profesor Sam!
Bro. Sam has taught a series of classes for Just Imagine students and we have been extremely happy with all of them! He is engaging, the students enjoy him, and the finished product is beautiful.
Brother Sam is an outstanding instructor and tutor. His lessons are creative and motivating. He is able to connect with young people in a way that challenges them to do their best.
Bro. Sam is PATIENT! My children 15,13 & 11, are challenging to say the least and one of them has been diagnosed with ADHD. Mr. Collins has worked well and successfully with all three! He has worked with them individually and as a group. We see significant improvements in their writing and general knowledge of English. Their grammar and sentence structure knowledge is much improved. They are more comfortable working through writing assignments and expressing themselves. Thank you Bro. Sam for all of your hard work with them!
