About James
James “Fuzz” Sangiovanni
Who am I?
My name is James Sangiovanni but friends, family, musical colleagues and even professors have been calling me “Fuzz” since I’m a child. Now it has become my professional name, as ironic as that sounds. I was born and raised in NY, both in and around the city, received my B.A. in Music Composition and Performance, English Literature and Psychology from Stonybrook University and currently reside in Connecticut. My musical journey began on guitar and it is still the instrument I’m most proficient on. But throughout my professional career I’ve also worked as a vocalist, bassist, pianist, drummer, banjo and ukulele player as well as a songwriter, producer, arranger, musical director and studio engineer.
What have I done as a performer?
Over the past several decades I’ve been fortunate to travel the world as an international touring and recording artist, wrote, produced and released over a dozen albums worldwide and have performed with and lead many musical projects I created, namely Deep Banana Blackout, Caravan of Thieves, Big Fuzz, Fuzz and Carrie and Rolla. I have been hired to play guitar and sing with artists such as the Tom Tom Club, Stephen Kellogg and Ryan Montbleau and throughout my travels have been fortunate to perform and work with wonderfully talented people like The Allman Brothers, John Scofield, Keb Mo, Emmylou Harris, Tom Dowd, Phish, The Funky Meters, members of the James Brown band and many others.
What have I done as a teacher?
As an educator for almost thirty years, I have been teaching private individual lessons, classroom workshops and campus lectures in schools all over the country and for all ages and levels of musicianship. Within these formats I’ve covered instrument instruction, music theory, songwriting, collaboration, music production, music history and cultural awareness and appreciation, which gave birth to many informative and fun programs I created such as “America’s Musical Melting Pot” and “The Art of Songwriting and Collaboration”.
What is my philosophy?
My love for music transcends all genres, formats, levels, cultures and settings, as I am certain there is always something new to learn and experience in music and life in general. For myself as an artist and with all of my students, the objective is to discover what our true inner voice is, then harness that resource to drive the inspiration and love for what we do. From there we find the motivation, focus and diligence to master our skills and find true happiness in the music and art that we create.
