The best new music is 100 years old!
Using music from Tin Pan Alley, Vaudeville, Speakeasies, Pre-code Hollywood and Broadway I teach theory, technique and repertoire.
These songs were selected because they follow a predictable pattern known as the circle of 5ths . Predictable chord progressions allow the student to learn not only individual songs but how dozens operate.
Advantages of Ukulele
1. A quality instrument can be had for much less $$$
2. Nylon strings are easier on younger and older fingers alike
3. There's always room for your uke (even in a backpack)
4. You don't have to be a great virtuoso to get a good sound
5. It's "hip" to play a ukulele (Don't believe it? Look on YouTube)
6. Your ukulele is your lifetime unconditional fiend!
Proven Method
This process is a combination of detailed explanation, micro managing the geometry and gymnastics of hand movements and monkey see monkey do.
1) The student learns chords that harmonize the melody
2) a strum pattern to create rhythm
3) how syllables in the lyrics are aligned with individual strums in the pattern so they can not only accompany themselves on their instrument but also fit into a larger musical situation
Curriculum Considerations
1) When learning a musical instrument the student experiences the unique integration of body and mind that music provides. Sensory integration is a crucial factor in children's learning readiness for school subjects such as reading, writing, and math. Music improves spatial-temporal reasoning.
2) This class is for anyone looking to acquire or improve ukulele technique and musical knowledge.
3) Although no formal assessment process or sections exist students will learn progressively more complex pieces as dexterity and hand strength improve.

Being a musician professional or recreational is one of the most fulfilling things in life
I took a year of lessons in primary school. Like many people the results were minimal. Partly because I was impatient and partly because I was taught a technique not used by actual musicians. It took a long time but I taught myself how to play a song that sounds like a song and to accompany myself singing. I was overjoyed (and still am today). Most people who want to learn to play are not seeking virtuosity. They just want to play a cool song. The good news is that the more time you spend just having fun playing your instrument the greater your skill will be

Typically the 1st lesson begins with an assessment; What can the student do at the time they begin instructions with me. Most of my students however, are absolute beginners. Using a song as a teaching tool and filling in gaps as needed

Children in pre-school to graduates of medical school
I offer a single paid lesson with no additional commitment. "Try one on for size". Then ask yourself, "Was it fun?", "Do you feel in one lesson you made real progress?" Or was it "excruciating pain and humiliation". Even the smartest people need a little help getting started with something new sometimes. Rome wasn't built in a day. Repetition is the mother of all skills. But you should feel some measure of elation as you take your first steps toward musicianship.

Details
$65 per month for four 30 minute Zoom lessons. Family discounts are available. Pricing for in-person lessons is negotiable based on commute.
Cancellations are permitted provided there is a 3 hour notice and make-up classes are redeemed within the same paid lesson cycle. It's easier to retain satisfied clients than to find new ones. I strive to be flexible.
